Celebrating Diversity and Inclusion: Marta Matras

Celebrating Diversity and Inclusion: Marta Matras

At Continental Tyres, fostering an environment of inclusivity isn’t just a buzzword. Diversity and inclusion play a pivotal role in the success of any company committed to progress and innovation – particularly in an industry like ours which is traditionally male-dominated.

That’s why we’re highlighting some of Continental’s inspirational women, like Marta Matras General Manager of Transport. Here, she talks about her career to date and her advice for aspiring female professionals looking at a career in the automotive and transport sector.

Q: What inspired you to start your career in the automotive and transport industry?

A: I’ve had a number of different jobs – from graduating as a Paramedic in Poland to working in fresh produce when I moved to the UK – and while working in office environments, I discovered my passion for the operational aspects of business. I’ve also always been passionate about the environment and looking into the sustainability side of transport. Throughout my career, I have made sure to grab any opportunity for learning, even on top of my day-to-day job.

Q: What does ‘Inspire Inclusion’ mean to you?

A: For me, it’s about fostering a culture where diversity is celebrated. There’s not a lot of women getting into areas which are mainly male-dominated, but what I love about Continental is the diversity. If you are driven, have your goals and a structured approach of where you want your career to go, there’s so much support to enable you to get there.

Q: As a woman in a leadership role, what advice do you have for aspiring female professionals in our field?

A: Believe in yourself. Set yourself structured goals and don’t sit and wait for something to happen for you – grab opportunities when they arise. Also, build your network and be supportive to others.

Q: In your experience, how has diversity positively impacted innovation and problem-solving within our company?

A: From my prospective, diversity has enhanced creativity within the business. You have a variety of people from different backgrounds with different thought processes. Having varied approaches and skills I think definitely enhances the creativity within the business and that’s allowing the company to thrive.

Q: What steps do you believe we can take as a company to continue fostering a culture of inclusion and equality?

A: I think promoting diversity in leadership which Continental already does, and it’s been happening for quite some time. Continuing to support women in career development and having more conversations about what’s possible in terms of progression and opportunities.

Q: Can you share a time when you felt particularly supported by your colleagues at Continental Tyres?

A: With Continental, everyone is very supportive and very open. I’ve never met anybody who puts you down. It’s a global corporation but it feels much more like a family business. I’ve always felt supported by the company and by my line managers, without them opening those doors for me, I would not be where I am today.
