Beyond the Rainbow: Reaching LGBTQ+ Audiences in Unexpected Spaces

🏳️🌈 Happy Pride Month from fluent360! 🏳️⚧️

As we commemorate Pride Month, it’s crucial to reflect on how we, as marketers, responsibly engage with and support the LGBTQ+ community – especially during a modern Rainbow Scare. Too often, modern marketing strategies treat the LGBTQ+ community as a monolith and paint the community with one stroke of the brush which fails to recognize the rich diversity and unique experiences within it.

👾Beyond the Rainbow: Understanding the Nuances and Digging Into Niches

Many marketers target LGBTQ+ audiences solely through explicitly LGBTQ+ spaces or with broad messaging language that feels like more coded allyship than anything else. Those approaches overlook the other staple environments where LGBTQ+ individuals naturally thrive and discard messaging that forms a connection.

This year, we're focused on two areas shaping the community in this climate: overlapping spaces and intersectionality.

★     Identify Overlapping Spaces: LGBTQ+ individuals often find community in spaces not exclusively designated as LGBTQ+. Not every LGBTQ+ consumer has access to a Gay bar or a Pride festival – or maybe they just don’t vibe with that scene! For example, comic cons/fandom conventions, E-Sport gaming tournaments, underground music scenes (i.e. Punk, Goth, and EDM spaces), and Fine Arts communities are popular and provide unique opportunities for engagement.

★     Intersectionality is Key: Inclusivity means featuring more than just one LGBTQ+ demographic. It's crucial to represent the full spectrum of the LGBTQ+ community, including transgender, intersex, non-binary, bisexual, lesbian, and other identities because each of these sub-groups has its affinities and consumer behavior! What the Lesbian community is drawn to, is not always what the Trans+ community is drawn to, for example, so being aware of these subtle differences will help avoid missing out on key audience members. This broader representation fosters a sense of belonging and shows that your brand truly understands and sees the LGBTQ+ community which cultivates long-term brand loyalty.
