4 Ways To Write For The Job You Want, Not The Job You Have.

Last week I spoke with a client who said that she was getting calls from Recruiters and receiving requests on LinkedIn but it was never for the job she wanted. It was always for jobs like the one she currently had. She was starting to doubt that she had the skills for the job she wanted and this was starting to affect her confidence.

It didn’t take long to realise that because she was writing for the job she currently had, she was attracting these types of jobs. By changing her approach to writing, she could then attract the types of jobs she wanted.

So, some ways to write for the job you want, not the job you have include:

1 – Know the job you want. By researching and clearly identifying the job you want, you will be in a stronger position to target your application to meet their requirements

2 – Identify the key words for the job. Knowing the key words for the job will allow you to meet the needs of Application Tracking Systems (ATS).

3 – Make it relevant. By making sure that the content in your Resume is directly relevant to the role you are applying for, you mitigate the risk of your document being diluted with irrelevant space fillers.

4 – Formatting. Having great formatting can make key points stand out. It also makes it easy for a Recruiter to see if you have the skills required.

The key is to make it Relevant, use Rich Content and Research.

Writing for the job you want, not for the job you have is a bit like heading to the beach on a hot summers day in a knitted jumper, a scarf and boots. It just isn’t going to work out very well and you will just become uncomfortable.

In this case, the client I spoke with changed her approached and started attracting the types of roles she wanted and her confidence was quickly restored.

This is key for any application placed, especially when working through a recruitment consultant. With you telling us about the career you ultimately desire, it cuts out any chance of us missing a placement for you or even worse placing you into a position you don't want. A number of candidates, I am worried, are going to be taking any position offered. The market isn't great but guys, you shouldn't settle.
