It's not every day that we get to save a tree that is over half a millennium old. The Allerton Oak, one of the oldest in Northwest England, has witnessed medieval courts, survived the shockwaves of a 19th-century explosion, become a Victorian era attraction, and welcomed World War II soldiers collecting its acorns for luck. We're inspired by how our team at WSP in the UK and Bartlett Tree Experts used engineering ingenuity to help protect our natural heritage. They created a growth-friendly system of vertical and diagonal props with padded steel cradles. In addition, advanced software was used to model the Allerton Oak and the system to ensure the design supports future growth.
