Interesting question Didier Laurent . Relevant strategic question for all CPG companies. I agree, I have tremendous respect for Nestle. Global peers in my mind are P&G and Unilever. (Which I worked for for 30 years) My take - all 3 benefit from global scale, and strong brands. Nestle and Unilever have very strong developing and emerging market presence which is good - this is where demographics and sheer population growth will occur in the next 80 years. Nestle, P&G, and Unilever will all be around in year 2100. My view is that Nelson Peltz brought a rigorous focus to P&G, and now Unilever that is not yet evident at Nestle. In Unilever case, it is separating Ice Cream (with eventual likely divestment), focusing on what it terms its “power brands” (30 key brands which make up 70% of its sales), and cutting costs via 7500 headcount reduction. Tough emotional legacy decisions that will drive success - Nestle likely needs need to focus it’s portfolio in the same way. I believe P&G, Nestle and Unilever are exceptional organizations that will continue to shine in the CPG spacethrough the 2000’s. Today is my last day at Nestle. Over the last 20 months I've encountered a lot of firsts, learned a ton about CPG, and learned a lot about myself. This was my first corporate experience. I went from Founder of 5 years, to being 1 of ~275k employees. To say I had culture shock would be an understatement. But, this shock forced growth and development that I'm not sure I would have gotten many other places. Was it always fun and easy? absolutely not. Was it like being a founder? no sir. But did it make me a better person and stronger professional? 100%. absolutely. Oh, I had performance reviews for the first time too lol I also got to learn how the largest CPG company in the world operates. From a corporate structure side, to the brand team side, and of course the innovation side. Helping lead innovation projects for legacy brands like Nescafe, Coffee mate, Stouffer's and more was pretty dang cool. I mean...these are BILLION dollar brands. Thats still bonkers to me. To get a better idea, these projects are focused on whitespace innovation. And in corporate lingo, horizon 3 of McKinsey's 3 Horizons model 😉 They're also end to end. So while they were abbreviated ~6 month projects to validate or invalidate an opportunity, we went from scope to on-shelf MVP during those ~6 months. This involved legal, regulatory, design, quant/qual, product development, production and more. I was exposed to many corners of Nestle that stretched around the world. Which brings me to my next point. Having access to the resources at Nestle was such a privilege. From every bit of data you can imagine, to the brilliant minds within the organization (and theres truly a ton), to the weight that the Nestle name carries. It really is a privilege. Being able to see and learn the metrics of significance and the tolerance/requirements of those metrics for various brands was enlightening. Required margin. Growth plans. Price pack architecture. and so on, and so on. Maybe most important of all is that learned 3 million acronyms as well 😂 Like I said earlier, I learned a ton about myself too. BUT I'm going to make that a separate post for another day. I want to reflect on it just a bit more so that when I do share, I'm being as open and honest as possible. So you're probably wondering what I'm up to now. Well, I just raised a $30m seed ro..... just kidding. I have an incredible new role with a truly amazing company that I'll be stepping into on October 16th. Apologies for being vague but I'm going to hold off on sharing the details until I get a bit settled. Until then, I'm going to be taking some time to visit friends and family back around Philly and on the east coast starting today (im driving back to philly now for expo!!!) to around October 9th.
