Youth Opportunities and myself would like to wish South Africa a Happy Youth Day! Today, on June 16th, we celebrate South Africa’s National Youth Day. This day holds immense significance, commemorating the Soweto Uprising of 1976, where brave young people stood up for their right to education and a better future. It is their courage and sacrifice that paved the way for a more just and equitable South Africa and now, as we reflect on the past, I urge everyone to remember the unwavering spirit of those young heroes and to let their stories inspire us to create a future where all young South Africans have the opportunity to thrive. Let us also remember that today’s youth face a different set of challenges - unemployment, access to quality education, and mental health concerns, to name a few. We need to empower them with the resources and support they need to overcome these hurdles and become the leaders of tomorrow. Here’s how we can all contribute: • Amplify youth voices: Let us actively listen to the needs and aspirations of young people. Support youth-led initiatives and provide them with platforms to express themselves. • Invest in education and skills development: Equipping young people with the right skills is crucial for their success. Let us advocate for quality education and accessible training programs. • Promote mental health awareness: Let us break the stigma surrounding mental health and create a safe space for young people to seek help. To the young people of South Africa: Your spirit, resilience, and innovation are the driving force behind our nation’s progress. Youths are the only future of our planet after all. They already have a voice and they have a lot to say. They don't need adults to give them a voice, but they need adults to offer opportunities for participation, relevant choices, and appropriate guidance. When adults provide meaningful support, provide growing challenges, roles and responsibilities, youth can develop the skills they need to become independent, engaged and empowered citizens. August 12 marks the annual celebration of International Youth Day as an awareness day, designated by the United Nations (UN). The day emphasizes the rights of young people to have full access to education, healthcare, employment, monetary services and complete participation in public life. This day also recognises and celebrates the contributions of young volunteers and activists who are pushing for positive change around the world as youngsters serve as catalysts for peace and prosperity, not only in their local communities but on the global stage. The AU-EU Youth Action Lab is an initiative co-funded by the European Union implemented by Oxfam, Restless Development Uganda and the European Youth Forum. The project addresses the lack of opportunities for youth in Africa and Europe to collaborate, develop, implement and scale up their own initiatives. It is designed to support young people to be more engaged, empowered and connected. At the heart of the project is the opportunity for youth initiatives to apply for powershifting grants. Youth initiatives will receive funding to implement their own ideas and solutions to global challenges. History is witness to the fact that the most influential and magnanimous people in the world are those who have had the greatest skill in investigation, reasoning, discussion, exploration, and in the power of their expression. The British Council is seeking to understand more fully the challenges currently being faced by young Ukrainians, both in Ukraine, and those who have moved outside its borders since Russia’s invasion. Much of our programming in Ukraine has been changed significantly since 2020, and it is important to get a clearer understanding of young Ukrainians’ needs, hopes, and aspirations in their own words. We are therefore seeking a partner to conduct research that investigates, records, and makes explicit these concerns, needs, and hopes. This research will help us with future programming. The biggest issue with young people who are not in education, employment, or training is what the abbreviation NEET stands for.
