Meet Ольга Гресько visiting Fulbright scholar from Ukraine, who applied to the program in the midst of the Russian-Ukraine war. "Despite the air attacks on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities, the absence of electricity, and other circumstances inherent in war, I applied and got it!" said Dr. Gresko. As a long-time journalist, Dr. Gresko is fostering a collaboration between Ukrainian and American journalists at the Philip Merrill College of Journalism - University of Maryland, combining the best reporting practices of each country, and working with Capital News Service students. Whether throughout Africa or on the home front, media literacy is a critical piece of the puzzle to tackling disinformation. From the article: " ... blocking an outlet like Afrique Média will do little in the effort of containing propaganda. '[The strategy should just be] basically building resilience in the audience, because even if Afrique Média ends up not being there, there will be another outlet that will crop up,' [Allan Cheboi, who works as Senior Investigations Manager at Code for Africa] says. For him, the key lies in teaching media literacy and fostering education, skills that Code for Africa helps local newsrooms build by having journalists learn how to identify and report on misinformation, disinformation and propaganda across the Sahel region.'

This week the students of the Journalism MA program at KU Leuven hosted Dr. Basak Yavcan, MPG's Head of Research, for an interview on the current challenges in EU policy-making on migration and migrant integration. Together with the students, Başak explored various aspects of the current political discourse on migration, including the media's influence on shaping public and policymaker attitudes, issues of discrimination and migrant integration.    Additionally, it emphasized the significance of evidence-based journalistic reporting and the use of comparative indexes like MIPEX to combat misinformation. This April, I had the opportunity to visit Bulgaria and some of the projects that funded through the Active Citizens Fund of the EEA and Norway Grants. One of those was the "Science and Journalism: Together against Infodemic" by the Association of European Journalists - Bulgaria. I keep reflecting on how important these initiatives are, especially in light of how #fakenews and #disinformation are affecting democratic processes in Europe. Looking at what is happening today, it's hard to accurately express just how important it is that people have access to accurate information, and are equipped with the skills necessary to distinguish between fact and fiction. Which is why I was so impressed by the Association of European Journalists - Bulgaria. One of the things that they are working towards is teaching critical thinking to children and youth, and employing them with media literacy skills so that they are able to navigate the modern media landscape. It is a critical venture and we should all bear in mind that it is a cornerstone in fighting against the backlash on #women's rights, #LGBTIQIA+ rights and #equality overall. 🕊️ Transforming Media for Peace in Nineveh, Iraq: A Year in Review Our "Practicing Media for Peace" project, funded by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), brought together 19 journalists from diverse backgrounds in Nineveh Province, fostering a unique learning and collaborative environment. 📚 Empowering Through Education The project kicked off with workshops that provided an in-depth analysis of Iraq's media landscape. Participants were encouraged to critically examine how media narratives influence social cohesion. This knowledge was further enhanced in the second phase, where journalists partnered with local media outlets, applying their insights in real-world scenarios. 🗣️ Amal Hussien, Journalist & Participant, Reflects: "I realized the importance of covering a topic from all angles, including the opinions of all relevant parties. This approach is crucial for gaining a genuine and unbiased understanding of the media environment." 🌐 Deepening Insights with Focus Groups Insightful discussions with audiences across various cities in Nineveh enriched the project. These interactions informed the creation of impactful media content, leading to collaborations with five local media outlets. Production teams worked together to craft narratives that promote unity and understanding. 🤝 Talal Murad, Director of Ezidi 24, Shares His Thoughts: "The cooperation between journalists and media outlets was commendable. The quality of the reports was enhanced by accurate and sincere data, a result of in-person training, online meetings, and continuous communication." 🔗 Legacy of Unity: Tashabuk.media The project culminated in the launch of "Tashabuk.media," a platform symbolizing unity.
