The Importance of Media Literacy in Today's World! We are now in a digital world in which a never-ending flow of media messages competes with us. There are so many news articles, which cover a range of topics, social media posts, advertisements, TV shows, and movies that occupy all the time we are awake. People are subjected to new data everywhere they look, and the result of all these is they quickly become confused about who to trust. Media literacy becomes a crucial tool at this point. Media Literacy is a skill used in thinking critically about the messages we are exposed to through different media platforms. It involves testing the validity of premises, examination of the methods designed to catch our attention and control our thoughts, and identification of bias and inaccuracies. Developing strong media literacy skills is essential for several reasons.Nowadays, information is overly saturated with the presence of fake news, deepfakes as well as false information. Regardless of whether you are online or offline, it is more difficult to tell which one is the truth. Media literacy provides us with necessary tools such as the ability to verify information from legitimate sources, to know with objectivity subliminal messages of media who are trying to manipulate us, to regard the views of different people, to be able to think critically and deeply. Media literacy helps to check the contextual purpose, to look at different perspectives in the media environment and question the assumptions through which one could navigate the media environment clearly and discernibly. Media literacy has become an essential skill in the era of information chaos where every person is a potential dispenser of false news. It enables us to move from the role of media messages' recipients into the roles of the media message's author. We can do this by keeping the media literacy muscles exercised. The world is full of divergent content and with more confidence and understanding, we can make a sensible choice.

We love that UNESCO has been doing a lot in digital literacy. One of the most striking (end essential) things is creating a definition of literacy that includes digital. Here is the definition of literacy according to UNESCO (paraphrased): __________________________________ Becoming literate is more than just a one-time thing. It's not only about reading, writing, and counting. Literacy means knowing, understanding, explaining, creating, and communicating in a quickly-changing digital world. Being literate keeps growing and changing as you learn. It encompasses many skills like using digital technology, knowing about media, understanding sustainability, global citizenship, and work-related skills. As more people use digital technology, literacy skills themselves are also expanding. __________________________________ Seeing traditional and digital literacy together is critical to breaking down barriers that some people have to digital literacy. In a world with such a robust digital influence, the ability to understand data and its impact is just as essential as the ability to read and write. Yet, we are not setting people up to be able to see that easily. Traditionally, children learn to read and write when they start school. They begin with fundamental skills like the alphabet, and slowly, we as a society strive to get them to develop those skills more deeply over time. Crucially, we want them to appreciate the value of improving their reading and writing skills over time. We make it clear to them that this is essential to learning how to communicate better and build strong relationships. That said, a person's literacy level depends on what they want to do in life. For example, a plumber and a university professor need different literacy levels to do their job well and develop relationships with their peers. This is a concept that is generally known and accepted and is a guide for the educational systems that each one of these people pursues for their career. Going back to the literacy definition by UNESCO, combining digital literacy with literacy allows people to understand the fundamental goals of digital and data literacy initiatives. The original intent is to create a shared knowledge ground around data (what is data? where do we encounter it?). From there, we must strive to help people see the value of improving their mindset and skillset over time until they reach the minimum needed to do well in their jobs and develop relationships.
