Law enforcement agencies across the United States are experiencing a significant increase in staffing since 2020. According to recent Police Executive Research Forum survey, many departments have resorted to increased salaries, hiring bonuses, and changing testing protocols to attract more applicants. However, the biggest factor contributing to this trend is the perception of the job and support from the community and elected officials.
This positive trend is crucial to ensuring the safety and security of our communities. Let's continue to support our efforts to hire and retain qualified law enforcement officers and work together to build a stronger and safer society. 👮♂️ 👮♀

It's easy to carry the line of don't lower standards, which I agree with. However there are many other mechanisms that go along with that. A study isn't needed to determine lower standards equal lower candidates, that's common sense, which our profession could use a healthy dose of.
Its time our leaders in uniform, captains and our chiefs and Sheriff's start acting in the fiscal best interests of the officers they have, as opposed to self preservation. Take an affirmative stand with city councils and county commissioners for better pay, better benefits, contemporary training packages which enhance the career development of what the officer wants to do in their career progression, as opposed to archaic in-service modules based on just what they have to do.
It's very easy to say on the mountain top not to lower standards... which there is a time and place for that. However the rank and file are tired, and talented and affluent candidates do not want to hear lip service. They want to see action. Improve pay, improve benefits, offer a future, instead of a patrol car, cuffs, badge and the archaic practices which we are spinning our wheels in.
It's way past time.
Law enforcement should always evaluate their hiring practices to ensure that they are still relevant and attracting the best candidates for their agencies from the public. Still using recruiting practices from the 1970’s or even the 1990’s will not work in the 2020’s. Each of the generations have different motivations and experiences that attracts them to the law enforcement profession. While we should always look at our advertising strategies, application and interview processes, etc., we should never lower our standards and accept poor candidates just to fill open positions. Law enforcement needs people of high character, integrity, professionalism, and dedication and that will never change. When law enforcement agencies lowers their hiring standards, scandals from excessive force, corruption, and criminal activity often follow. This was clearly shown by Miami PD in the 1980s, Washington D.C. Metro and LAPD in the 1990’s, and most recently Memphis PD as well as by small agencies who hire officers with a past history of problematic behavior just to fill open spots. When law enforcement accepts less then the highest standards for the selection of officers we hamper our profession and also provide a disservice to the public we have sworn to serve.
