We are the oldest federal law enforcement agency, and we enforce laws and investigate crimes involving the U.S. mail.
About us
The U.S. Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) is the oldest federal law enforcement agency, and we enforce laws and investigate crimes involving the U.S. mail. U.S. Postal Inspectors are federal law enforcement officers who carry firearms, make arrests, execute federal search warrants and serve subpoenas. Inspectors throughout the country enforce roughly 200 federal laws related to crimes that adversely affect or entail fraudulent use of the U.S. Mail, the postal system, postal employees and customers. To assist in carrying out our responsibilities, we maintain a uniformed force of Postal Police Officers who are assigned to critical postal facilities throughout the country. These officers provide perimeter security, escort high-value mail shipments and perform other essential protective functions. We also maintains a state-of-the-art forensic laboratory in Dulles, VA which contains highly trained forensic scientists and technical specialists. We are divided into 17 Divisions across the country and employ close to 2,500 professionals. Whenever we open hiring windows, we will announce them here and on our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram channels. Last week, two Postal Inspectors were recognized by Dr. Rahul Gupta of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy at the U.S. Interdiction Coordinator Awards. This ceremony recognizes excellence in investigations that disrupt the flow of dangerous drugs and dismantle the criminal networks that supply them to our communities. Los Angeles Division Inspector Rex Castro and Miami Division Inspector Ralph Garcia received awards for two separate investigations. Inspector Castro was recognized for a cyber investigation with the FBI that resulted in 6 arrests of darknet opioid dealers and over 500 pounds of drugs being taken off the streets. Inspector Garcia was awarded for an international investigation with the DEA targeting China-based chemical companies, who played a key role in the manufacturing and importing of fentanyl and precursor chemicals using counterfeit postage to hide their activity. This investigation led to record sanctions against these manufactures and seven indictments. I am very proud of the exemplary work of these inspectors, but I know these are just two examples of the great work that inspectors are doing every day. Working with our partners, we will continue making strides to protect the American public and keep the U.S. Mail safe. #USPIS #ONDCP #WhiteHouse #interdiction #award #congratulations

After being featured in a Wanted Wednesday video, New York Postal Inspectors received a tip about the assault and attempted robbery of a letter carrier. Deputy Chief Inspector Pete Rendina details how this tip led inspectors to identify the suspect, who was ultimately arrested and convicted for the crime.

This week, USPS Chief Technology Officer Scott Bombaugh, PE and I had the privilege of hosting Under Secretary for Science and Technology Dimitri Kusnezov of the Department of Homeland Security and Deputy Director Adam Cohen of the Office of National Drug Control Policy at the USPS Engineering Facility in Merrifield, VA. Our discussions centered on recent developments in technology and analytics that will strengthen our ability to identify drug shipments and suppliers. We are committed to expanding our collaboration to prevent fentanyl and other harmful drugs from being transported in the mail. My heart goes out to the thousands of families who have lost loved ones to the fentanyl crisis. Postal Inspectors will continue to relentlessly investigate these cases and hold individuals responsible for the destruction that fentanyl causes. #USPIS #DHS #ONDCP #lawenforcement #collaboration #CombatDrugs
