Sarcomas, a diverse group of malignancies with over 50 subtypes, require specialised expertise for accurate diagnosis and treatment. Often evading early detection due to their rarity and varied presentation, understanding them demands deep knowledge and extensive experience. This Sarcoma Awareness Month, we interviewed Unilabs sarcoma imaging expert Dr Björn Jobke to discuss the role of advanced imaging techniques in diagnosis, and the importance of a multimodal treatment approach to avoid unnecessary invasive procedures.   "I remember a case from my time as a resident in Bone Pathology when we received a resected femoral head (the ‘ball’ at the top of the thigh bone) from a younger patient with uncontrollable hip pain," says Dr Jobke. "After a thorough investigation of the specimen, the patient turned out to have a tiny (3mm) benign tumour, known to cause severe pain. If identified earlier with dedicated imaging review and expertise, the patient could have avoided a hip replacement which is a life-changing, invasive procedure and been treated definitively with a minimally invasive technique.”   Learn more about sarcoma types, the diagnosis approach and developments in sarcoma radiology and care: https://lnkd.in/eJurWffP #Diagnostics #Cancer #Healthcare
