Today, at Manchester Hall, Arup proudly sponsored the thought-provoking “Sustainability in Practice: Retrofit” conference, in collaboration with Morgan Sindall Construction, Buttress, and TECHNAL UK. As a panellist, I had the privilege of diving into the scale of opportunity for retrofit in the North West property market. My Reflections & Key Takeaways: Embracing Embodied Carbon: Just as London has experienced, the focus on embodied carbon is now making its way to Manchester. Sustainability is no longer optional - it’s a driving force. Developers must diligently consider demolition versus rebuilding to minimise environmental impact. Navigating Complexity: Options appraisal and viability assessments are pivotal decision-making steps. Too often, retrofit ends up in the “too difficult” bucket. It’s time for our industry to shift that perception and embrace the possibilities. Unlocking Potential: Every building - whether historic or contemporary - holds untapped potential. Let’s peel back the layers, reimagine spaces, and create a sustainable future for our cities. Skills Across the Value Chain: The skills gap extends beyond technical installers. It encompasses procurement, suppliers, project managers, and surveyors. Collaboration across the entire construction and engineering ecosystem is essential for success. If you want to discuss routes to unlocking retrofit and sustainable buildings, please send me a message or comment below. I'm keen to continue championing retrofit, sustainable buildings and innovation in our industry. ️ #WeAreArup #SustainableBuildings #Retrofitting #ArupInsights

The greenest building is the one that already exists, so why are we demolishing so many? On #Thursday, we dig deep into the world of retrofit at this Place North West event and ask if we are any closer to overcoming the colossal challenge of repurposing and reusing our existing buildings. Book your ticket and be part of the solution. At Sustainability in Practice: Retrofit, we are bringing together developers, architects, contractors, local authorities, and more to share best practices, lessons learned, and case studies that show the practical ways we can actually deliver retrofit initiatives at scale.

Empowering progress, building responsibly: Rothoblaas – Your partner in sustainable construction! In the ever-evolving landscape of sustainability, I am pleased to highlight a pivotal development from the European Union. A groundbreaking amendment to the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (#EPBD) has been announced, setting a transformative course for the construction industry. Commencing in 2027, construction companies and developers will be obligated to consider CO2 emissions in new buildings larger than 2000 m² through a Life-Cycle Assessment (#LCA). Importantly, by 2030, this requirement will extend to all new buildings, regardless of their size. This significant leap forward not only underscores Europe's commitment to carbon reduction but also sets a precedent likely to influence global building practices. As Europe takes ambitious strides towards carbon reduction and heightened accountability in buildings, architects play a pivotal role in this transformative journey. It is crucial for them to acquaint themselves with sustainability tools to ensure their preparedness before the 2030 deadline. Life-Cycle Assessments, along with Environmental Product Declarations (EPD), are set to become the norm in the built environment. Rothoblaas, in alignment with these progressive measures, stands ready to support architects, builders, and the entire construction community in embracing these changes. Our EPD initiative, rooted in the LCA methodology, positions us at the forefront of sustainable practices. As architects worldwide prepare for this paradigm shift, Rothoblaas remains dedicated to providing tools and innovations that align with the evolving standards of our industry. Together, as we navigate these transformative times, let us embrace sustainability not just as a choice but as a collective responsibility. Last week, #MULTIPLEXCanada's Senior Sustainability Manager, Anya Barkan, spoke on the Accelerating Housing and Low Carbon panel at the Ontario Association of Architects Conference. There’s an inherent tension between the need to build 1.5 million homes in Ontario by 2030 and our need to drastically reduce our carbon emissions simultaneously. This multi-disciplinary panel was based on a collaboration between BDP Quadrangle, TAS_Impact, RWDI, Smith + Andersen, Entuitive, ASPECT Structural Engineers, RDH Building Science and Multiplex Canada to understand and share perspectives on what we can do now to accelerate residential buildings to net-zero. Panel Highlights: - Build smarter structures by optimizing the design, reducing the quantity of concrete, and building with low carbon materials. - Prioritize the enclosure to reduce the thermal load. - Electrify heating systems to drastically reduce operational carbon emissions throughout a building's lifetime. As part of the Pre-Forum events of the Buildings and Climate Global Forum hosted by the French Government and UN Environment Programme in Paris this week I attended the workshop: Engaging policy to advance low carbon, resilient communities and quality of life hosted by U.S. Green Building Council , The Enniscorthy Forum, and the UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (Whole Life Cycle Policy Coalition). There was a great panel on Policies to Decarbonize Buildings Faster and More Equitably, where we heard from designer Anica Landreneau from the global design firm HOK speak about the evolution of building performance standards for existing buildings as well as highlight that “there is no path to the Paris Agreement without more investment in reusing our existing buildings.” Anica and Alexis Pelosi from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) also highlighted the $1 billion of investment from the US Federal Government for jurisdictions to adopt the latest energy codes and #zerocode, such as the 2021 IECC and its Appendix CC. We also heard from Helena Rivers from the global design firm AECOM that they are now collecting the operational and embodied carbon for all their projects and have a target of a 50% reduction in Whole Life Carbon (WLC) for all their projects. They join the announcements I heard yesterday at the World Green Building Council Building Life event from design firms Ramboll and Arup who are making available their own WLC project data and lessons learned. Nigel Tonks shared that Arup measured and evaluated over 1,400 projects and have published a case study, which includes their methodology and lessons learned. Rikke Bjerregaard Orry from Ramboll announced their launch of an anonymized and filterable database of their 128 projects, as well as their assessment of the various regional and global WLC standards. I applaud the leadership of these global design firms and look forward to learning about the similar efforts of other design firms in measuring and reducing whole life carbon. #BuildForClimate #DesignIsClimateAction #BuildingReuseIsClimateAction Architecture 2030 Lori Ferriss, AIA, PE Kelly Alvarez Doran Lisa Richmond Edward Mazria Kira Gould
