Today FDA authorized four additional NJOY products: two pods for its Ace closed e-cigarette device, which was authorized in April of 2022, and two disposable e-cigarettes—NJOY DAILY Menthol 4.5%, and NJOY DAILY EXTRA Menthol 2.4%. Importantly, the decision marks the first time the FDA has authorized a non-tobacco flavored vapor product. The approvals also likely trigger an additional $500 million in cash payments by Altria for its purchase of NJOY, which finalized one year ago for $2.75 billion. Other players, will have similar products approved to aid in the transition of menthol smokers, with consumer, satisfying nicotine delivery products. For the consumers not quite ready to quit, there would be available the only combustible tobacco product given MRTP standing, VLN menthol cigarettes, shown to result in smoking 50% fewer cigarettes, and capable of breaking the addiction bond that has too often led to intolerable withdrawal symptoms, leading to cessation failure. Big tobacco has no grounds to carry on fighting against the menthol cigarette ban nor the VLN mandate, if they have any integrity, honoring their proposal to see the end of the combustible cigarette.
