We are at our best when we know we belong.   At our fifth annual Global DEI Summit, we discussed how Employee Resource Groups create a sense of inclusion by uniting employees with shared identities and experiences.   At Johnson & Johnson, more than 26,000 employees are involved in one of our 12 ERGs. These indispensable organizations foster a greater sense of community and connection across the company.   ERGs also improve how we work. We often consult with ERGs to pressure-test new programs or important communications to ensure that we are being as inclusive as possible. In fact, it was HOLA, our Hispanic ERG, that initially pushed us to increase diversity in clinical trials. Today this is a core part of how we innovate.   I encourage all employees to get involved in an ERG. As a member, advocate, or ally, you’ll find a great personal and professional return from the relationships you’ll establish.   I’d love to hear: Are you involved in an ERG at your company? Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Does it matter? Is it important… In my opinion it really matters! It is a significant driver of performance, innovation, and a great way to retain or attract talent! Promoting DEI isn’t just important; it’s a powerful catalyst for growth. Here’s why: 1. Diverse views fuel creativity & drive progress. 2. It creates a sense of community & belonging. 3. Diverse teams tend to have better results. I have learned that much in the last 18 months leading the Synovus Employee Resource Group “Aquí Nos” and championing these values. “Aquí Nos” means “Here We Are,” symbolizing the presence, resilience, and strength of the Latino & Hispanic community. I also belive this name embodies the essense of inclusion! “Here we are TOGETHER” (Aquí Nos juntamos) I have met so many incredible people and have had the pleasure of serving together with great leaders such as Meredith Winitt Forrester, Julissa Santoyo, Rudy Sosa-Febo and Erika S. Chambliss! I have also collaborated with many other diversity groups. ERG’s are not about exclusivity but about INCLUSIVITY. About bringing everyone together and embracing those things that makes each of us unique! Here is some Practical Tips for Promoting DEI: 1. Host cultural events to educate and inspire. 2. Encourage open dialogue & collaboration. 3. Empower talent with guidance & opportunities. After 10 years away, we moved back to the Netherlands this summer. Although it feels amazing to be back, there is something I need to get off my chest: This week was Diversity Day in the Netherlands. Another initiative to celebrate the diversity of the workforce. And LinkedIn is on fire, showcasing the ethnic diversity through get togethers, panel discussions and diversity lunches. While we chose to support our clients on this day, I am also thinking: how many more iftars, keti koti tables and diversity lunches do we need to "celebrate" the diversity of the workforce, when the ethnic diversity in leadership is practically non existent? How many SVPs of colour, how many MDs of colour, how many partners of colour? 1%? 2% maybe? And please don't count the expats to cheat the discussion! Meanwhile 16% of the Dutch workforce comes from ethnic backgrounds. Looking at master degree graduates, 16% is ethnically diverse today, and 15 years ago this number was already at 12%. So where is this 12% of ethnically diverse master degree holders (that now have 15 years of work experience!) in your leadership line-up?? Since I returned this summer, I am being asked for keynotes and panel discussions and working sessions to educate leadership on the importance of ethnic diversity. So what should I do? More talking? More convincing? More handholding? I think we have talked enough, and it's time for action! The excuses: but we don't have data on ethnic diversity to support taking action; but we are worried about backlash from our non-diverse workforce; but we are still working on our diversity strategy; but we can't find any ethnic leadership talent. There are plenty of excellent DEI consultants that can help you: Geraldine Moodley, Jamila el Mourabet, Vivian Acquah CDE®, Naomi Sedney [LL.M, MA INSEAD], Shenin Lebrun (just to name a few). There are plenty of actionable and proven solutions available right now: Wrokko, Global People, Omek and of course ROOTS INSPIRE! Thank you @sergiopanday for your words. At The Diversity Doctor we work through the stages of Awareness, Action and Accountability. As Sergio points out, simply celebrating diversity leaves us stuck in the awareness phase. The action phase is long overdue. If your company celebrated Diversity Day, PRIDE, International Women’s Day etc this year, please take a moment to ask yourself what action are we taking to facilitate a positive change before these dates roll around next year? It's May and we're celebrating Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander American Heritage (AANHPI) Month! Here at Centriply, as we appreciate the many contributions of the AANHPI community to our culture, we're again reminded that locating audiences--the right audiences--with an ad campaign is critical for brands. For instance, Asian Americans are the fastest growing consumer market in the US--with a collective purchasing power of $1.6 trillion(!) and counting per Nielsen. A few weeks ago, as part of our Johnson & Johnson Global DEI Summit, our 12 enterprise Employee Resource Groups educated our company about the impact they have made over the past year. I heard stories from ERG members about how they’re developing top talent, creating #inclusive spaces to drive innovation and business results, and educating colleagues and building allyship.   These stories remind us that our company is stronger when we bring together people of different backgrounds, experiences and perspectives. That’s why this Global Diversity Month, our theme is “What Makes Us Strong: Celebrating Our Cultural Differences.” We invite our employees to consider how their unique cultural background contributes to a stronger, more inclusive #JNJ community.   Let’s use this month as an opportunity to engage in open and meaningful conversations about diversity, equity and inclusion.
