TRANSMUTEX, a Geneva-based nuclear engineering startup has just closed its over CHF 20 million Series A extension round co-led by Union Square Ventures and Steel Atlas and joined by Verve Ventures, At One Ventures, HCVC, AlleyCorp, House Of Ventures, Presight Capital FONGIT and Tiny Supercomputer Investment Company. Transmutex is reinventing nuclear energy with the design of a safer, non-self-sustaining reaction technology that will usher in a new era of lower-cost and proliferation-resistant, carbon-free baseload energy. The system can use different fuel material and enrichment levels, thereby unlocking vast resources, including thorium, a metal that has long been overlooked for nuclear energy. When thorium is used as fuel, it does not produce plutonium and other long-lived waste. The technology's key promises are inherent safety, resistance to proliferation, and the transmutation of long-lived nuclear waste produced by uranium-based nuclear. The latest edition of the dashboard serves as a testament to their collective effort, offering a comprehensive assessment of progress across 56 SMR designers and companies worldwide. Beyond mere technical feasibility, the NEA SMR Dashboard stands as a vital resource, equipping policymakers and industry stakeholders with invaluable insights to advance climate objectives and enhance energy security. Through meticulous evaluation across dimensions such as licensing, siting, financing, supply chain, engagement, and fuel, they are not just envisioning the future but actively shaping it. The OECD Nuclear Energy Agency SMR Dashboard unveils a landscape marked by significant progress towards SMR deployment and commercialization, both within NEA and beyond its member countries. This is such a useful guide, especially considering the huge number of actors in the SMR industry. The NEA SMR dashboard gives an excellent overview of how the different reactor designs are progressing, not only in terms of technical development, but also with respect to licensing, siting, establishment of the supply chain, etc. It gives a more realistic insight into the actual readiness levels of the different designs. Recommended reading!
