My major take-away from #ENLIT Europe 2023: its becoming acceptable to address the gap between visions for a future energy system and practical solutions available in the real world. Acceptance of reality is a critical first step towards developing realistic roadmaps and taking small but steady steps ahead - as well as large strides as announced at #COP28 At ENLIT Europe, John Warden and I had the opportunity to test and present our findings and approach for the 8 Issues that #nuclear energy needs to address so fission or fusion technologies can fulfill their potential and make their major contribution to global #netzero . The panel discussion with Anicet Touré, Eric Ingersoll, Jan Prasil, Sophie Macfarlane-Smith, Yves Desbazeille showed that there is good basis for optimism. Our tracking model, created by the NECG - Nuclear Economics Consulting Group team also with Edward Kee, Paul Murphy, Jay Brister, should serve investors and other stakeholders well to understand and steer progress over time.

Engineers at the Joint European Torus (JET) #nuclear #fusion #reactor in #Oxfordshire, UK are taking on a unique challenge as the facility reached its end of life. In a first-of-its-kind attempt, the team is recycling the reactor, repurposing valuable equipment and dealing with high levels of contamination inside. Over 105,000 #ignition attempts were made during its 45 years of operation. #Robots are being used to dismantle the tokamak remotely. The lessons learned from this project aim to inform future nuclear fusion endeavors and help manage radioactive waste. The components will be stored for future research and #energy stability efforts.
