The USA has just announced funding and strategy development grants to 31 Tech Hubs to concentrate research efforts on areas of critical societal need. In the energy space five hubs have been successful: 2 general technology and 3 domain specific in wind, battery and nuclear. The nuclear hub, Intermountain - West Nuclear energy Technology Hub is investigating small modular and microreactor technologies. Small modular reactors (SMR's) are at a similar or more advanced technology readiness level than green hydrogen (depending on the individual technology) - but the lack of commercial availability is used as a reason why SMR technology shouldn't be adopted. Green hydrogen is also not available commercially at scale. Is Australia missing a trick by not supporting emerging nuclear technology as part of our clean energy future? What does the USA know that Australia doesn't?

#WNE2023 | Assystem is accelerating AMR/SMR programmes! According to the OECD's Nuclear Energy Agency, small reactors could account for up to 10% of the world's nuclear production by 2040. To support this growth, Assystem has been committed to this innovative field for several years, already working on numerous AMR, SMR, and xSMR projects. During WNE 2023, we reiterated our commitment to the sector through several key moments: 🤝 Assystem strengthened its collaboration with newcleo on their Advanced Modular Reactor (AMR) project. We will provide newcleo with expertise in digital engineering structuring and tooling, integration (technical coordination and systems engineering), nuclear safety, and project management. 🆕 We announced the creation of a new business unit dedicated to small reactors and the design of service offerings tailored to companies in this sector. 📝 We signed yesterday on our stand a partnership agreement to develop digital twin solutions for SMR/AMR projects with Dassault Systèmes. 🎤 Three of our experts presented a workshop titled "Smart Site Selection for SMRs: A Safe and Resilient Approach" to demonstrate how Assystem simplifies the process of selecting the ideal sites for your Small or Advanced Modular Reactors.

The nuclear industry representatives, recall the urgent need for action. For the EU to achieve a net-zero future is imperative to fully support the pivotal role of nuclear energy alongside renewable energy sources. The EU is committed to providing secure and affordable energy for its competitiveness and its citizens, in the face of climate change and geopolitical risks. The milestone was first achieved on the 5th of December, achieving an output of 3.15 MJ from an input of 2.05 MJ to the fuel target. Initial data from the second succesful test indicated an output greater than 3.5 MJ. ☄ TRACTEBEL (BE) and First Light Fusion (UK) sign a framework agreement to jointly design the Machine 4 demonstrator. This research facility will be used to demonstrate net energy gain. Once operational, it will be the largest pulsed power driver in the world, at approximately 75 metres in diameter.   🤖 Nuclearn (US) raises a $2.5M Seed round led by AZ-VC with participation from Nucleation Capital. The startup was founded in 2020, with the objective to safely automate critical processes of the nuclear industry. In the past months, EDF announced delays and an increase in project cost for Hinkley Point C, Britain's new nuclear power plant consisting of two 1630 MW EPR reactors. 🏗️ The delays can be attributed to two main factors: 1️⃣ lack of consistency in nuclear reactor construction in Western countries in recent decades; 2️⃣ absence of digitalization and standardization in the processes and tools necessary to manage a nuclear project. Addressing the first factor involves maintaining an active supply chain by continuously building reactors, ensuring the preservation of know-how.
