Following our new report 'Navigating the Future of Small Modular Reactors in Competitive Global Low-Carbon Energy Markets' release back in December 2023, describing #SMRs as vital for achieving #netzero by the middle of the century, it is very promising to hear that the #UK Government Department for Energy Security and Net Zero will launch the next phase of its competition to develop a small modular reactor in the UK in the next few weeks. According to Tim Yeo, Chairman of the NNWI, “policy support for SMR technologies must be ramped up and carefully targeted to ensure we meet our mid-century net zero goals and facilitate timely completion of the clean energy transition. The world needs an initiative of the magnitude of the Marshall Plan to help the most carbon intensive regions replace their ageing coal fired plants with SMRs.” NucNet Nuclear News Agency #nuclear #smallmodularreactors #netzeroneedsnuclear #yestonuclear #energytransition #energymix #decarbonisation

⚛ Accelerating Small Modular Reactors' deployment for Net Zero! Our expert, Célestin Piette participated in a panel discussion at the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency workshop on the economics of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) in Ottawa, Canada on 27 February. 👨🔬 He focused on the role of #People in the deployment of SMRs worldwide to achieve economies of multiples. 👩🔬 🏗 To kickstart enough projects to make a difference, the nuclear industry needs to enlarge its pool of partners. To build an SMR market, industry stakeholders and future partners must understand the benefits for their sector. To do so, Tractebel has published thought leadership pieces, i.e.; two White Papers one on SMRs and one on data centres (Links are in the 1st comment). 🤝 To address the inherent risks of first-of-kind nuclear projects, it is crucial to build with partners you can trust. That is why, Tractebel has joined forces with Hatch and Laurentis Energy Partners to combine our complementary skills and ensure team continuity across both sides of the Atlantic. Once the initial success materializes, the gained experience can be transferred from one project to another. ⛓ The supply chain for SMRs is not yet ready. Luckily, the pool of potential suppliers is larger as SMRs are smaller and can incorporate commercial-grade equipment. To help new suppliers gain access to this market, Tractebel has developed a "Nuclear Quality Passport" program. 🚀 Bringing together people with the right #Mindset is key to accelerating the SMR deployment! #EngineeringaCarbonNeutralFuture #SMR #nuclearenergy #supplychain #innovation #netzero Jenifer Shafer Arnaud Rahier Eric Ingersoll Fabio Nouchy Gary Fischer Marcus Nichol Mark Tipping

Japan is pioneering Sodium-Cooled Fast Reactor (#SFR) technology through a strategic roadmap initiated in 2022 by the Inter-Ministerial Council for Nuclear Power. The conceptual design of a demonstration reactor began in 2024, leveraging Japan's extensive experience in SFR technology. Key projects by the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), including the experimental reactor #Joyo (operational since 1977) and the prototype reactor #Monju (since 1994), have significantly contributed to SFR advancements. Advanced design and safety evaluation efforts are driven by ARKADIA, an #AI-aided system that optimizes plant design and lifecycle evaluation by simulating operational scenarios and maintenance. The development of safety design requirements and codes specific to SFRs incorporates lessons from past experiences to enhance safety. Fuel cycle innovation focuses on advances in #fuelfabrication and reprocessing to improve efficiency and reduce waste toxicity. These efforts align with Japan's #sustainability goals, supporting decarbonization and energy security while promoting the efficient use of natural resources. How do you see the SFR technology reshaping the #globalenergy landscape? #NuclearEnergy #SustainableEnergy #FastReactor #SFR #Innovation #EnergySecurity #Decarbonization #AI #Technology #NuclearInnovation

Best invest in Building and talking about Fusion power, space, maritime propulsion systems and industry as data centres are. Great Headline, Guardian on Nuclear fission. https://lnkd.in/g8sMZtpR People talk about Nuclear (meaning Fission) and fail to discuss fusion. https://lnkd.in/ge_aeX7M The nuclear fission industry is ignorant of what's happening around it. It must pull its collective uranium heads out of the sand and prepare to enter the commercially growing fusion energy industry. Fission is moving towards obsolescence at an ever-increasing pace, as it is "out of step, out of time, out of place, and soon to be out of Fuel" and merely temporary. https://lnkd.in/gbd_mZqk By 2028, Helion is expected to start producing electricity from its first fusion commercial power plant, which will provide electricity to Microsoft. The plant will produce at least 50 MWe after an initial ramp-up period. https://lnkd.in/gY9J3MQY Now, see what is happening in the world of the fusion industry. https://lnkd.in/g9hMBD7a As fission trebles, fuel shortage is increasingly real, https://lnkd.in/gze5rwpr

🚀 Sneak Peak! 🚀 Introducing Aalo-1, our pioneering product! We've hit an important milestone with the completion of the conceptual design report. The journey to this point has been nothing short of exhilarating, and I'm absolutely thrilled at how our reactor concept has come to life. What sets the Aalo-1 apart is its design philosophy - engineered for manufacturability right from the drawing board. Our aim? To achieve a groundbreaking low capital expenditure (CAPEX) per megawatt. The potential here is immense, and we're on the edge of our seats to dive into the next phase where we turn this paper reactor into a practical one. Light up with the power of Wattage Wednesday. Kairos Power is developing an advanced nuclear reactor called the KP-FHR (Fluoride-Salt-Cooled High-Temperature Reactor) that uses “meltdown-proof” TRISO (tri-structural isotopic) fuel particles and liquid fluoride salt as the coolant instead of water. This design aims to be inherently safe, efficient, and complementary to renewable energy sources. Recently, Kairos Power successfully operated a large Engineering Test Unit (ETU) for 1,000 hours using 12 metric tons of molten fluoride salt. This non-nuclear prototype is being used to test systems and gain operational experience for their Hermes low-power reactor, which could be operational in Oak Ridge by 2026 as part of the DOE's Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program. The ETU demonstrated key components like molten salt pumping and validated Kairos' ability to manufacture the salt coolant. In the near future, they plan to construct upgraded ETU versions culminating in construction and operations of their Hermes Reactor in the early 2030s. #kairos #hermes #GenerationAtomic #WattageWednesday #advancednuclear Source: https://lnkd.in/g7CZWTpc https://lnkd.in/d2M9-BkH

Cutting-edge projects led by Cerberus Nuclear, Jacobs Clean Energy, and the University of Bristol exploring digital scanning technologies to identify deformities in 500L drums at Sellafield Ltd have advanced to the proof of concept stage of the Game Changers process. Twenty-one applications were received, four feasibility studies were completed and now three projects will receive funding to further develop their technologies, with anticipation high for the potential breakthroughs that may emerge. The challenge is to pinpoint drum distortions while drums sit inside designated four-drum stillages within an inspection cell. The distortions, akin to lumpiness, are the result of uranium-containing nuclear waste reacting with the high-pH water in the grout used to encase it. With the drums numbering around 23,000, the ability to conduct in-situ, precise drum inspections will give Sellafield Ltd greater confidence in their understanding of the evolution of the stored waste and reduce how frequently future inspections and interventions are required. Read more about these projects and the Game Changers innovation programme on our website: https://bit.ly/4e3w0gP Do you have a technology you think would be of interest to Sellafield?
