Our purpose is what drives us. Our vision is what guides us. And our mission is what keeps us moving forward day after day. This is true for people. And it's true for schools. Some people walk into a building and they see the school's Mission or Vision Statement posted boldly on the front wall. And, sadly, that's where some of those Missions and Visions go to die. I believe that great organizations continuously follow their mission and rarely stray from it. The starting point of an organization is getting down to the core of what the mission is. Once you have that, the challenge becomes living into it every day. As a principal you get complaints every day. Whether it’s about the car line being too slow, or a teacher who doesn’t return emails to parents in a timely manner, or my most recent favorite, the ordering process takes too long so I bought what I needed for my classroom. After the emotion of the problem wanes, it’s critical to take the time to reflect on what it is the person is really asking for? What system might be broken? What communication channel was dropped? We are constantly sending signals related to our personality styles! We can even get clues from questions that we ask! • Dominant Styles asks - What are we doing?! • Influencing Styles asks - Who is going to be there? • Steady Styles asks - How are we going to do it? • Compliant Styles ask - Why are we doing it? I want to know "WHY are we doing it? and WHAT is it we are trying to get done? The benefit of knowing the personality style of those you spend the most time with is that you can deepen relationships, connect and communicate in their language, on their agenda. You see, for people to GO ALONG with you they need to GET ALONG with you. What about you? Do the questions line up with your style? How about your teammates? Your spouse or children?
