For the past two years, The Center For Water Security and Cooperation has had the privilege of working closely with IAPMO and ANSI - American National Standards Institute, with support from USAID, to understand whether the national laws of Ghana, Uganda, and Zambia encourage the realization of the human rights to water and sanitation and the adoption of standards that create a safe and reliable marketplace for WASH products. Join us on February 21st at 8AM ET to learn more about what we found and ask questions! As we consider the insightful perspective shared by Catarina, it's evident that sanitation and water challenges persist, particularly in regions where marginalized communities and refugees lack adequate resources. Empowering these communities with sustainable solutions goes beyond addressing a basic necessity; it's about restoring dignity, fostering health, and providing a foundation for progress. Needless to say, it's crucial to recognize that access to clean water and sanitation isn't merely a matter of convenience; it's action to achieve #unsdgs, a fundamental right that intersects with #publichealth, economic development, and societal equity. Stakeholder commitment to addressing these pressing issues is commendable, and it's essential to channel efforts towards creating a world where no one is left behind, and where every person, regardless of their background, can thrive.
"There are very few opportunities where a single investment can improve public health and quality of life, spur economic growth, and reduce inequalities, but investing in water [and sanitation] does all of these things and more." CEO of Sanitation and Water for All - a UNICEF-hosted global partnership, Catarina de Albuquerque, writes about the hurdles that leaders and communities continue to face in achieving safe sanitation and the actions required for a healthier and more equitable Africa. #FridayGift 12/24: Today's highlight is a report that explored the regulatory landscape of water and sanitation across Africa. By far, this is the most comprehensive report on this topic and its relevance remains despite its publication 2022. One of the reasons I enjoyed reading it as a WASH professional was the four categories of regulation that it explains for most countries in Africa. These include regulation by agency, by contract, by ministry and by self. It additionally provides the highlights of regulatory mechanisms, arrangements, instruments and their establishment and improvement. From accompanying reports at the ESAWAS website, more regional focused subsections of the Africawide report are also available. If you are in this space, I suggest that you keep a copy for your library. It will still be relevant 5 years from now. Uganda has been highlighted as a good performer in the global report for the Mutual Accountability Mechanism by Sanitation and Water for All - a UNICEF-hosted global partnership and am happy to be part of this process. About the MAM: SWA’s Mutual Accountability Mechanism (MAM) is the only global accountability process dedicated to all stakeholders working together towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals’ water and sanitation targets. Since the MAM was launched in 2018, over 450 global and national commitments have been tabled by stakeholders from 65 countries across the globe, including 50 national governments. Over one hundred commitments have been reported as fully or nearly fully achieved. Accountability is central to the SWA partnership. It is the willingness to accept responsibility for one’s actions and account for them to others. It is a requirement for progress and a human rights principle. Accountability is about how promises are translated into action and aspirations into reality. While States ultimately have an obligation to ensure the realization of the human rights to water and sanitation, all stakeholders have a role to play in moving our societies toward the vision laid out in the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. In response to this need, the Sanitation and Water for All partnership has created the Mutual Accountability Mechanism: a tool for partners to commit and hold each other to account for progress in achieving the SDGs’ water and sanitation targets – as well as an opportunity to collaborate, learn and catalyze collective action.

On today's episode of our #CountryPotential series, we will be highlighting Cameroon's progress in the WASH sector. #Cameroon has made significant strides in the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) sector, focusing on improving access to clean water and sanitation facilities for its population. °As of 2019, 71% of the urban population and 46% of the rural population had access to improved water sources, while 37% of the urban population and 22% of the rural population had access to improved sanitation facilities (World Bank, 2021). °The National Water Development and Sanitation Program (NWSP) was launched in 2017 to improve access to safe drinking water and sanitation facilities in both urban and rural areas. °International organizations and NGOs have also implemented partnerships and projects to support WASH efforts in Cameroon. °UNICEF has been working with the government to improve water and sanitation services in schools and health facilities, while Cameroon has actively participated in regional and international platforms focused on WASH issues. You can take the lead by investing in Cameroon's WASH sector ( https://bit.ly/3uGv93p)!!! #cameroon #wash #sustainability #sustainabledevelopmentgoals #sustainable #investments #opportunities #companies #water #hygiene #sanitation #sanitationforall #cleanwaterforall #cleanwatermatters #sdg7

According to IRCWASH CEO Patrick Moriarty, a groundbreaking approach is needed to achieve the #SDG6 by 2030. “We need to see water and sanitation as a service. [...] We developed a blueprint for a WASH system in development countries and can offer this to the countries that participate in the Heads of State Initiatives. We already support countries we work in with implementing this systemic approach, and we will be happy to do so for the countries that join the Initiatives”.
