“If every day were Earth Day we wouldn’t be in the mess we’re in.”— Neil deGrasse Tyson Ravaged by human activity and inactivity alike, Mother Earth has been reduced to a shadow of its former self. Yet, hope blooms once more this Earth Day with people all over the world coming together to not only participate in gestures like cleanup drives and fundraising, but also pledge to honour the environment every single day. At Austin, we believe that, much like small plants flower into big trees, our collective actions will create a sum greater than the sum of its parts and go a long way towards making our planet smile again. Here’s to a brighter and happier tomorrow. Happy Earth Day! #EarthDay #Environment #Sustainability

Despite jokes that lazy people invented the bicycle “because they didn’t like walking or carrying things”, cycling has long been a great way to show that you’re anything but lazy! Impressed by (and slightly envious of) two of our colleagues who regularly cycle to work and tirelessly finish their 9 to 5 after all that exertion, while the rest of us – the couch potatoes – watch on, we joined them on a short cycling round one summer afternoon and came away feeling inspired. This Bike Week, we at Austin applaud them and other cyclists who set an example through their actions, and motivate more of us to have fun, and take our bicycles for a spin ever so often. #BikeWeek #CyclingIsFun

As many of you are aware, new legislation enshrined in the Building Safety Act 2022 was given royal assent in April 2022. Secondary legislation was enacted by the Building Regulations 2010- (amendment) (England) regulation 2023, which came into effect on 1st October 2023. We have been asked by some to provide a brief outline on what this means, hence this post. This new legislation created new roles of Principal Designer Building Regulations (PDBR) and Principal Contractor Building Regulations (PCBR). It is important to note that these two new roles were created in addition and do not overwrite the current Principal Designer and Principal Contractor duties under the CDM Regulations 2015 (PDCDM 2015 and PCCDM 2015) placing new duties upon Client. Under the new legislation, the Client now has a legal duty to appoint Principal Designer and Principal Contractor (Building Regulations) and review their competency. The primary role of the PDBR is to take reasonable steps to plan, manage and monitor the design before work starts on-site to ensure that the design complies with the Building Regulations. The PCBR has a duty to plan, manage and monitor building work during the construction phase of the project, coordinate the building work to ensure compliance with all relevant requirements of the Building Regulations. These roles can only be carried out by individuals or organisations with the required competency level, skills, and established management processes. If you have any questions regarding these new roles or would like to understand more about duties as a client, please do not hesitate to contact us – we will be happy to help.

Food has long been a medium that brings people together, from the days when prehistoric men hunted in packs to the present where people bond over dinner parties and drinks at their favourite bars. On this World Day of Cultural Diversity, we at Austin decided to pay homage to our diverse roots by organising a potluck in the office and use delectable home-made dishes from around the world as our bridge into the rich and vibrant cultures we belong to. Indian chicken curry, Polish cheesecake, dumplings from Hong Kong, Lithuanian “pink” soup, Rajma Chhole, “Mike’s” salad – you name it, we had it! The perfect seasoning to the spicy conversations around the table.
