To which group do you belong? 🌴 1️⃣ People who take vacations during busy times to escape from the daily hustle, overlapping meetings, stress, and chaos. They often say that taking PTO, for example, between Christmas and New Year's Eve is pointless because not much is going on. 2️⃣ People who take vacations when there's a peaceful time at the office - holiday season, days between Christmas and New Year's Eve, etc. They prefer PTO when they know the office is calm and tranquil, reducing the chances of issues arising during their absence. I had this discussion a few days ago with my colleagues from MasterBorn and I would say I belong to the second group, although I do take vacations during both periods.😁 👉 In the first scenario, I don't like the madness right before my PTO when I prepare the team and try to wrap up as much as possible before I'm gone. Additionally, I never work during PTO and sometimes the post-vacation workload that awaits me can be overwhelming. It's like a post-arrival shock 😉 My life philosophy involves striving to avoid drastic energy and mood swings. I seek balance. That's why the second scenario is more calming. So even though I take PTO during busy times AND the holiday season as well, I find more relaxation in the second scenario. I've been pretty bad at taking real, disconnected vacations since I received my first company Blackberry(!) in 2009. So reading research from Project: Time Off totally blew my mind. They measured the relationship between vacation days taken and which employees received merit increases. 35% of people who took less than 10 days off received an increase 65% of people who took 10 or more days off received an increase In many ways this metric is more indicative than other research into the relationship between vacations and productivity (which, spoiler, vacations make people more productive.) So, if you're reading this, your work can probably wait until Tuesday. Just sign off for the long weekend.

It's important to take a break! If you're like me and struggle to use up all your vacation days, take note: in 2024, use all of them. For now, plan some long weekends and take some time off to recharge. Make a to-do list and a to-don't list, and don't feel guilty about taking time for yourself. Studies show that it takes about two weeks to fully disengage from work, so shut down completely and enjoy your time off. Your company and coworkers will figure it out without you. Let's prioritize our well-being and take some much-needed breaks. Use this week to plan some long weekends or that future trip you've been putting off. See you in a couple of weeks!

We got interesting results concerning of the right amount of the vacation. 84 % of the electors prefer 2-3 weeks’ vacation to get enough regeneration. Personally, I think, that one week or less is too less to regenerate, but some studies show, that already couple of days are enough to get new power and energy. (see Jessica de Bloom (she,her,hers)  How do vacations affect workers’ health and well-being?)   Quite often employer and employer agree, how long the vacation in a row will/should be. As well employer laws in several countries are regulating the minimum length of vacation. In Sweden for instance the employee has the right to have 4 week’s vacation in a row between 1st of June and 31st of August.    As a leader you should allow your employees to have enough time for regeneration. The approach to taking time off to go on a vacation differs across cultures and continents. The amount of days that workers receive according to official labor laws varies greatly. In the US, each employer can decide on the annual time off allowed - the average being between ten to fifteen days - , whereas in Denmark employees are entitled to twenty-five working days a year. Psychologists and researchers have been studying what kind of vacation is best for relieving stress, recharging for work, and making the biggest impact on health and wellbeing. The conclusion: longer vacations aren’t necessarily better than shorter ones. Research from the University of Tampere in Finland shows that the best approach is to take shorter, more frequent vacations. Health and wellbeing rapidly increase after the start of the holiday and seem to peak on the eighth vacation day. Basically, it takes some time to wind down after a stressful work period and acclimatize to vacation. Wondering how to maximize the positive effect from your vacation?
