Suzanne Kapner’s Post

Read my latest profile of Macy's new CEO Tony Spring. He is drawing on his hospitality training to bring a sense of theater to the department store chain. "Our job is to get people compliments," he said. Do you think Macy's can be saved?

Start with a tour on department stores in Asia- compare a Macy's location to Central Retail Group for example...

I truly hope he turns it around and they don’t sell out. While it may seem like a good business decision for the stockholders it surely isn’t for the every day people. It means losing that in person shopping experience. I understand some of the younger generation likes to shop online but there’s still enough of the generation left to support the brick and mortar stores. You just have to offer quality products at a “fair” price. Not the inflated prices we are seeing.

Shop for what? People need Convenience, Clarity in sourcing, price and quality, Welcome nature and everything at one place through Omni-channel and buy anywhere and pick or deliver experience. Macy's pickup line is same as USPS line for stamp purchase. This guy is drinking some other cool-aid, maybe with some never macy's shoped Strategy Consulting firms PPT advice. Macy's credit card is labeled as AMEX and managed by Citi - one of the scariest financial experiences for customers. You can just copy what COSTCO, WALMART or Target do, stop using fancy customer experience jargons from Consulting firm.

Here in Chicago, Macys has been a disaster. The iconic downtown Marshall Fields location is a shell of what was once a retail legend. That being said, no good ever seems to come from these private equity buyouts. They only want to buy a company to strip it for parts and make a few bucks. On the other hand, if Selfridges would come back to its roots I pan Chicago, there might actually be a reason to shop there again.

Hopefully Macy's avoids a leverage buyout, and they need focus on selling more upscale merchandise besides apparel, like bicycles and other recreational merchandise, the things can't be easily bought online, and department stores would be a good idea for selling more merchandise than aren't already sold in the same mall.

If there is a chance for a turnaround, Tony will make it happen. It’s an absolutely iconic brand that we worked on years ago to introduce the highly successful INC clothing line.

It’s worth trying. The stores have been a disorganized mess in recent years.

Acceptance of gaps is half the problem solved. Great attitude 👍 worth learning from.

No. Retail is very Darwinian, always evolving to meet consumers needs. The 20th century formats are fading away, and exciting new ones will emerge.
