This is amazing! Overall nearly 5m people watched the Darts final, alongside many more who followed the story as it unfolded in the news and on the TV. Who knew Darts could ever capture people's attention like this? Although it shouldn't necessarily be surprising, given a few signals we've seen along the way.. 1. Sports is smashing it out of the park from an audience perspective. Sky Sports audiences are up overall year on year and tournaments across all sports are breaking live viewing records. 2. A young talent coming up the ranks to (almost!) win, apparently from nowhere, especially in a sport where there's an 'establishment' has happened before - we saw similar in the US open with Emma Raducanu. Fictionalised in Ted Lasso, in Rocky, in so many epic films - we love an under-dog story. 3. When a sporting story makes it out in to the mainstream, it pulls audiences back in - see what happened with Drive to Survive and F1. Thank you Netflix. What is interesting about this Darts final is the profile of the audience it brought back with it - more upmarket (64% ABC1 vs. 47%) and younger (23% 16-34 vs. 13%). 46% of the audience were new to watching darts on TV. I wouldn't count myself as a typical sports fan - I know little about the rules, or the players. But, I love the fact sport can pull people like me in with the stories, the rivalries and the nail-biting-edge-of-my-seat-can-they-do-it excitement. (*total engagements on posts where a brand was mentioned) 👜 When Prada is name-dropped in a post, it generates the highest overall number of followers to hit the like button (1 out of every 10 followers). There's a big opportunity in this space, as 74% of brands currently do endorsements with only 1 artists (whereas for athletes, its <60%) - partially driven by collectives, players associations and scaled league deals.
