There is power in knowing your history, and that’s something that Lucinda Canty, PhD, CNM, FAAN, FACNM attests to personally and professionally. Learning that both her grandmother and great-grandmother were enslaved informs her work to address Black maternal health by giving Black women back the autonomy and control of their bodies that were lost. It is her ancestors’ stories that give her the strength to pursue her work for health justice. Thank you for sharing. Especially on Juneteenth. My grandmothers have always given me strength and wisdom. Grandma Canty-Estwick and Grandma Hightower are always with me. I honor them along with my great grandmother Harriett Grant. Happy Juneteenth!!!

Thank you for sharing your powerful story. Your dedication to fighting for better healthcare for African Americans, especially in light of your family's history, is truly admirable. Your work as a midwife is so important, and I appreciate your commitment to making a difference. Stories like yours remind me of the book "Medical Apartheid" and the ongoing struggle for equity in healthcare. Keep up the great work - your efforts are inspiring and much needed. Wishing you all the best.

My grandmother was born in 1890 and enslaved when all were supposed to be free. I was blessed to have known her and listened to her stories of being sold to another plantation at four and not being reunited with her mother and siblings until she was a grown woman. We are still not free, but we are our ancestor's wildest dreams!

This is deep! I understand how it stays, lingers and keeps bothering. I had some midwifery experience in rural villages in Nepal. I can relate some aspects of women being in very unsafe situations. The pain that you endure is not an easy one! Your ancestors are proud of you ♥️😇
