The number of children forcibly displaced from their homes doubled in the last decade. At the end of 2023, 47 million children lived in forced displacement. Despite the growing numbers, solutions have been out of reach for far too many displaced children. 😥 As displacement becomes increasingly protracted, children often end up spending their formative years in limbo, missing out on crucial opportunities that will be difficult or impossible to catch up on later in life, with immense costs for individuals and societies. Too many children and youth on the move grow up deprived of an education, learning opportunities and the long-term benefits they afford.  📚 From the onset of a crisis, children need access to essential support and services like healthcare, education, social protection and protection that are crucial to their safety and wellbeing. They need to be able to live in an environment that fosters their healthy growth and development. They all deserve a fair chance in life – to not only to survive, but also to thrive! ❤️ Providing solutions for refugee and displaced children requires all hands on deck but unlocks a triple win for refugee children, host community children and host governments. One example is PROSPECTS - a multi-year program, funded by the Netherlands since 2019, uniting the International Labour Organization, UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, UNICEF, and the The World Bank to address forced displacement in Egypt, Ethiopia, Iraq, Jordan, Kenya, Lebanon, Sudan, and Uganda. I called the MPs and other politicians to petition a permanent ceasefire and end the occupation in Gaza. It hit me how they all have the word "honourable" in their title while comfortably supporting genocide and ignoring Human Rights Watch, United Nations, UNICEF, World Health Organization, Amnesty International, International Medical Corps, World Medical Association and the Foreign Press Association, to name just a few worldwide organizations advocating for Human Rights. Who will these "honourable" people quote on their upcoming "Happy Holiday" cards? Then again: 🔸 "In Canada, research shows that Indigenous women are 400% more likely than other Canadians to go missing. Estimates suggest that around 4,000 Indigenous women and girls and 600 Indigenous men and boys have gone missing or been murdered between 1956 and 2016. The article Building the Settler Colonial Order: Police (In)Actions in Response to Violence Against Indigenous Women in "Canada" contributes to understanding how police (in)actions make sense of, justify, and dismiss violence against Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA people." 🔸 On October 10, 2018, a CBC article stated that over 100 Indigenous women and girls have been lost since Trudeau took office. Five years have gone by since then. How many more Indigenous women have gone missing and murdered since then? 🔸 "Statistics Canada released data from the 2021 census that says Indigenous children made up 53.8 percent of all children in foster care." 🔸 "The policies and actions that were enacted to colonize Indigenous Peoples in Canada have been described as constituting cultural genocide. When one considers the long-term consequences from the perspective of the social and environmental determinants of health framework, the impacts of such policies on the physical and mental health of Indigenous Peoples go well beyond cultural loss." 🔸 "An estimated 150,000 children attended residential schools. An estimated 6,000 children died at residential schools (records are incomplete). In total, over 130 residential schools operated in Canada between 1831 and 1996. In 1931, there were 80 residential schools operating in Canada. This was the most at any one time." 🔸Chief at Neskantaga First Nation Chris Moonias posted: "Neskantaga FN is on its 10,535th day of Boil Water Advisory. Today, it’s a Do Not Consume Water Advisory." Sarah Jama's behaviour as an MPP is honourable - it is "honest, fair and worthy of respect." The Ontario government voted to censure her for speaking up in support of Palestine. This means she cannot speak in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario. Social and communications media play a key role in alleviating and exacerbating inequalities. I was a part of a transnational project which studied how asymmetries in accessing information during humanitarian crises can lead to differential access to housing, livelihoods and other necessities for migrants and displaced populations. Our recent work in the context of Arua, Uganda looks into how social media impacts the decision of the youth and directly affects their career choices. https://lnkd.in/dwuNt-Tx
