Extract-From Oprah to Rihanna to Rosalind Brewer, we’re seeing Black women build billion-dollar businesses and rise up into top leadership positions. Yet the truth remains that Black women are vastly underrepresented in leadership positions due to the continued barriers they face: Only 4.4% of Black women are in management positions and only 1.4% hold C-suite positions, despite being 7.4% of the U.S. population. The wage gap for Black women means they make less on average than white men and white women in similar positions. Despite an increased focus on diversity, equity and inclusion within companies, the daily experience of Black women in the workplace hasn’t improved in the last few years. Black women are almost twice as likely as women overall to say that they can’t bring their whole selves to work and more than 1.5 times as likely to say they don’t have strong allies, according to The Women in the Workplace 2021 Report. Thanks for sharing Amira Barger, MBA,CVA,CFRE Achieving parity for Black women bound with gender parity and we slip through the cracks.

Senior Business Leader I B2B Marketing Head I Non Executive Director I Global Wealth Management Strategist I Award Winning Marketer I Wealth Segment Strategies I Sustainability & Impact I
I had the pleasure of speaking on a panel about being a senior woman in Financial Services marketing this morning. It was great to share the stage with Mai Fenton and Elspeth Rothwell who are powerful women in their own right. We had a very open conversation to share with the room the challenges we have faced, and routes to overcome the hurdles of a full career. Thank you Jaemien Serrano for organising the fantastic event. My key take-aways were: 🕯 Don't be afraid to chart your own path to success and find a coach to help you identify where you are headed. ❤️ Find a partner in life and family that will support your career, and you support theirs, and work as a team. Don't do the false maths of calculating if the woman's salary will cover childcare and commuting costs to go back to work after maternity leave. Children in couples are a joint effort, and the cost of raising them should be calculated against your household finances not just the woman's. She could miss out on fantastic opportunities if she wants to go back to work but is convinced it doesn't financially make sense. 🚼 We all hope not to still be having this conversation in another 20 years, and I'm sure the next generation of fathers and partners will be even more involved in raising children and sharing the household burden. But we cannot lose sight of the fact that we are humans, and women are still the ones that bear children, breastfeed, and experience the hormone rollercoaster of menstruation, conception and the menopause. We shouldn't be afraid to talk about the bare truth of biology. We need to be supported as women if birth rates have any chance of holding up in developed economies. #womeninbusiness #womeninfinance #womenempoweringwomen #womenatwork #badgirlmaths
