📣Open for Contract opportunities📣 School is out, and in the spirit of having a few months off I want to take some time to refine my portfolio… When it comes to design, having an education isn’t enough. I tell my students all the time that A WELL CRAFTED PORTFOLIO IS KING 👑 I’m no exception to this rule, and I can admit I’ve been feeling the heat of being a hypocrite for a minute now. So I’m challenging myself to use AI to generate some creative briefs in areas I can use more experience in and showcase my own growth as a seasoned designer with over 7 years in the game. My chosen pedagogy has been design for social justice, and during my recent time at Sam Houston I’ve urged students to lean into design for community engagement and accessibility. Nowadays, it’s not enough just to kale things the “look pretty”, design has to solve an issue and serve a purpose. Shldr, was an app I developed during my MFA program at Pratt. It was a design response to the climate after COVID-19 where many of my friends and I were left to deal with real life events during one of the most trying times of our generation. I interviewed close friends, including my friend Lea who was in Residency at a major hospital in Houston, and my friend Ria who gave birth to her first child during the pandemic to see how their mental health was impacted by not being able to have a “normal” birthing experience. ✅ The solution: An app that uses a similar algorithm as Tinder to “match” women with women who are currently experience the same trials to form a sense of community at a time where we may feel isolation and can’t have direct contact with loved ones. Shldr asks users a series of questions at sign up to create group chats, connect users with the suicide prevention hotline, and curate organic connections. ✅ My work: User research Interviews Testing Brand Identity Prototyping (using Figma and Adobe XD) Video Editing Mockups View the full case study here https://lnkd.in/gKyPqyq6

My design response from my time at Pratt Institute was REALLY personal for me. Gradlink was designed to serve as a virtual mentor and resource for students that don't necessarily have the resources to help them prepare for their journey in higher education. The app uses information from the web plus AI to curate their own personal "roadmap" while their parents have access as well to hold them accountable. Gradlink even matches each student with their ideal college, amount of student loan debt associated, and what their entry level salary may look like upon graduating. No surprises. This was definitely a fun one! Read the full case study and view my process here: https://lnkd.in/gtsmFVrY

Cannot stress this enough
Names are incredibly powerful. Learning the names of things is how we begin to communicate as humans. Names empower objects with purpose and meaning. It is no different in UI. Layouts will often require many divs and containers. When designing a layout, I’ve found it helpful to slow down and think about why I’m creating a new frame in the first place. Giving a UI element a name helps with my own understanding of what its purpose is. Not only that, but a well-named and organized layer list acts as its own documentation that both designers and developers will appreciate. #figma #uidesign #designtips

📣 Open for Contract opportunities 📣 Throwback to some Branding/UI work I did for a client via my freelance agency. I cannot stress enough how important packaging and design is for a new business. As in real life, first impressions matter, whether on your digital footprint or on the shelf, it's necessary to catch your customers eye in a POSITIVE way. I look at brands all the time in Sephora, Target, and online and IMMEDIATELY remember my favorites just by the packaging alone.

📣Open for Contract opportunities📣 Did you know that GenZ already has a buying power of $360 billion?!! And reports say that this isn’t even their full potential yet! So my thought is, why not cater more of our branding nans design efforts to this audience? The truth is, many companies have already started to make the pivot towards the budding generation by implementing bold, modern typefaces and clean, bright color palettes. However, I wanted to create an identity for a product in an underrepresented space. I used AI to create a brief for a wellness company that sells vitamins and supplements geared towards our GenZers. Using the information it provided, I created the brand identity and packaging. Check out my process here: https://lnkd.in/giWVxyRC
