Ask Me About Health Communications | Director, Health Equity | Championing Health Equity at the Intersection of Health Communications and Digital Innovation
"First, the system marginalizes far too many people, dooming them to substandard care and worse outcomes. Communities of color, LGBTQ+ patients, even women—who, despite being more than half the population, often struggle to access appropriate care—all have demonstrable health disparities. People who fall into more than one of these groups are at particular risk of poor health and premature death. ... Healthcare leaders from marginalized groups will have more empathy with the health issues faced by those groups, a greater sense of urgency, and a better natural grasp of potential solutions than leaders who have no direct experiences to draw on." One of the best ways to make meaningful change and address health equity is by actually having diverse leadership. For something so obvious, it feels as though you need to summit Mt. Everest to achieve it. Yennifer Pedraza this article made me think of you and what we often lament about. #deib #healthequity #healthcare https://bit.ly/48kawcb

I help women's and LGBTQ+ health companies share their science in compassionate, approachable language.
Picture this: you’re chatting with your doctor during a routine appointment, and you mention your weekend plans with your partner. Suddenly, your doctor freezes. He tells you he can no longer proceed with the appointment because he isn’t comfortable touching you. Your provider rushes out of the room, leaving you sitting on the exam table, alone and confused. For the founder of this week’s ✨ One to Watch Wednesday ✨ #startup, this was a real-life experience. When Justin Ayars, JD came out to his dermatologist as gay, his physician balked and refused to touch him. In that moment, this provider stopped seeing Justin as a human being in need of care. Justin founded equalityMD so that other people don’t have to go through the same #medicaltrauma he—and countless other LGBTQ+ folks—experienced. The Problem: 😤 28% of LGBTQ+ Americans have reported that at least one #healthcareprovider they have seen was biased against them or stereotyped them (Rummler and Methani, 2022 — The 19th News). 👩🏻⚕️ 24% of LGBTQ+ people feel their providers blamed them for their health problems—versus 12% of non-LGBTQ+ who feel the same (Rummler and Methani, 2022 — The 19th News). 🙅🏽 35% of LGBTQ+ people and their partners feel that their providers are insensitive towards them because of their identities (Stein, et al., 2023). Queer folks deserve better. The Solution: 🏥 equalityMD is building a portfolio of #healthcareproviders with whom LGBTQ+ patients can feel safe and respected. They require all providers on their platform to complete specialized #culturalcompetency training on health issues key to the queer community. 🖥 Their platform leverages #telehealth to improve access to care in places that lack LGBTQ-informed providers. Providers can reach more patients, and patients can get the care they deserve. 💰 Their monthly membership is built to be financially accessible: it’s $79/mo, and it provides access to 12 primary care, 12 mental health, and 12 urgent care visits per year (plus access to 1000+ prescription meds). 📊 As they grow, equalityMD plans to build an AI-powered data analytics platform that will help drive their innovation—and society’s understanding of queer health concerns—forward. The equalityMD team has surveyed over 32,000 LBGTQ+ people nationwide and interviewed over 350 individuals in person. Through these discussions, they’ve gathered unique insights into the needs of LGBTQ+ patients, positioning the company as the go-to source for data on LGBTQ+ #healthcare. I look forward to a day when it’s inconceivable that a provider would refuse care to someone based on their #genderidentity or #sexualorientation. Until that day comes, I’m grateful that innovative companies like equalityMD are stepping in to fill the gaps. The total addressable market for LGBTQ+ healthcare is valued at over $200B, and Justin Ayars, JD and his team are early players in this growing market space. 👀 equalityMD is One to Watch! 👀

Breaking Barriers in Healthcare for LGBTQ+ Patients with IBD 🌈 We're proud to share groundbreaking findings from our latest survey, shedding light on the significant health disparities faced by LGBTQ+ individuals living with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The data reveals the urgent need for more inclusive and equitable healthcare practices. Key findings include: 1. Higher levels of stigma and discrimination reported by LGBTQ+ IBD patients. 2. Increased mental health challenges compared to their non-LGBTQ+ counterparts. 3. Barriers to accessing appropriate and affirming healthcare. These insights highlight the critical importance of fostering an inclusive healthcare environment where every patient feels seen, heard, and supported. Supporting health equity for the LGBTQIA+ community starts with awareness and partnership. Public health workers are instrumental in addressing healthcare disparities faced by the LGBTQIA+ community. Through education, advocacy, and support within communities, families, schools, and healthcare providers, we can make a significant impact. The 2024 Human Rights Campaign’s Healthcare Equality Index (HEI) shows promise—a record number of participants, more than 1,065 U.S. healthcare facilities, took this survey that measures LGBTQ+ inclusive policies and practices. The report found that overall, healthcare facilities nationwide are making significant strides in LGBTQ+ patient-centered care, implementing best practices, and staff training. Here are some key resources and organizations that support the LGBTQIA+ community: • NACDD’s Enhancing Cancer Program Grantee Capacity Through Peer-to-Peer Learning series on Strengthening Cancer Health Equity in LGBTQ+ Communities • Health Professionals Advancing LGBTQ Equality https://ow.ly/8vjU50SrVOa • Healthcare Equality Index: An annual survey by the Human Rights Campaign on healthcare inclusiveness for LGBTQ patients, visitors, and employees. https://ow.ly/hcBK50SrVOn • NAMI: Provides information about LGBTQ mental health https://ow.ly/6jMy50SrVOe • PFLAG: Focuses on support, information, and resources for LGBTQ individuals, their families, and allies. https://ow.ly/hPf350SrVOh • The Trevor Project: Offers information and support to LGBTQ young people https://ow.ly/JWk150SrVOg • American Psychological Association: Provides educational and support resources on a range of LGBTQ topics, including practitioner guidance. https://ow.ly/cU3950SrVOi • GLAAD: A nonprofit organization advancing acceptance through fair, accurate, and inclusive representation https://ow.ly/W8Lx50SrVOc Join us in spreading awareness and supporting these organizations! #PrideMonth #LGBTQIA #HealthEquity #EndDiscrimination #MentalHealth #NACDD #PublicHealth #Inclusion #BeAnAlly

Creating safe and inclusive healthcare environments is not just a necessity—it's a right. Every individual deserves to feel secure and respected when seeking medical care, especially those within the LGBTQ+ community, who often face significant barriers and discrimination. Why are these resources so crucial? Reduces Health Disparities: LGBTQ+ individuals frequently encounter healthcare disparities. Inclusive resources ensure these communities receive competent care tailored to their needs, reducing health risks. Builds Trust: When healthcare settings are inclusive, they foster a sense of trust and safety among LGBTQ+ patients, encouraging them to seek care when needed without fear of judgment or mistreatment. Promotes Mental Well-being: Discrimination in healthcare can lead to increased stress and anxiety. Safe environments support the mental health of LGBTQ+ patients, contributing to overall well-being. Educates Healthcare Providers: Resources that focus on inclusivity also educate providers about the unique health needs of LGBTQ+ patients, leading to better health outcomes. Strengthens Community Health: Inclusive healthcare practices enhance the overall health of the LGBTQ+ community, leading to stronger, healthier communities. Advances Equality: By advocating for inclusive care, we push forward the broader agenda of equality and acceptance in all areas of society. Healthcare providers and institutions must implement practices that ensure every patient, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, can access the care they need in a respectful and welcoming environment. #LGBTQHealth #InclusiveHealthcare #SafeSpaces #HealthEquality #LGBTQWellbeing #HealthcareForAll #LGBTQAdvocacy #EqualCare #InclusiveMedicine #PrideInHealthcare

Enhancing patient diversity in clinical trials is a priority in drug development. Groups such as women, pediatric and elderly patients, people with disabilities, LGBTQ+ individuals and racial/ethnic minorities are often excluded from trials. As a result, the U.S. government has taken increased measures to require sponsors to submit diversity plans. Learn more: #DiversityInClinicalTrials #InclusiveResearch #PatientCare

🌈 Celebrating Men's Health Week 🌈 This Men's Health Week, ACON's Pride Inclusion Programs are raising awareness about the unique health needs and social inclusion issues impacting GBTQ+ men in Australia. Despite making progress to improve the health and wellbeing of these communities, we still have a journey ahead to ensure their full and equal participation in society, free from discrimination, stigma and violence. We acknowledge the intersectional experiences of marginalisation and discrimination among queer men, especially in the health, corporate and sporting sectors. These settings often present significant barriers, which contribute to poorer health and wellbeing outcomes, decreased job satisfaction and productivity and lower participation in sport. ACON’s Pride Inclusion Programs will continue to promote LGBTQ+ inclusion within the health, corporate and sporting sectors, to ensure LGBTQ+ people and communities live happy and healthy lives. For LGBTQ+ inclusion support in health, corporate and sporting sectors, please visit https://lnkd.in/gg6uev-Q for more information. #MensHealthWeek #QueerMensHealth #PrideInclusion #ACON #LGBTQHealth #SocialInclusion
