Greece is usually a net electricity importer. But in the past few weeks, the country has turned into a net exporter—aided, in part, by an ongoing boom in renewable energy. The data is noisy, of course. But the 30-day average shows that net exports have reached an unprecedented level—higher than earlier periods when the country exported more than it imported (net exports in 2022 were unusual and driven by the wild fluctuations in gas prices). One should read short-term data with caution—we cannot extrapolate too much. But the numbers reinforce our strategic belief that our solar and wind potential can turn Greece into a net electricity exporter. And they underscore the need for greater regional connectivity in order for energy to flow where it is most needed.

Yes, with more interconnections and long-duration storage Greece could become a clean energy supplier for the region, unimaginable only a few years ago. Next step get rid of that gas before it becomes a stranded asset and a magnet for conflict in a gas-weaponized region.

Great news! In addition to the trade opportunities, greater regional connectivity can help improve regional climate resilience.
