Each week for the next month, I’ll be sharing aspects of my Gatheround Playbook — how I run our Series A, workplace collaboration SaaS, fully distributed startup. But before I start, I need to talk about something SO, so important to my team👇
🎯 OKRs 🎯
OKR stands for Objectives by Key Results. It’s a goal-setting technique that captures two things:
✅ Objective: The goal a company wants to achieve (“What”)
✅ Key Results: The measurable path to achieving that goal (“How”)
If your eyeballs will not stick to acronyms, I get it! But I promise this one is worth paying close attention to, because OKRs are actually at the heart of how I lead. (Shout out to my OKR guru Rick Klau.)
Because we use OKRs, we can:
📈 Maximize impact. We are a small team competing against big players; we need to punch above our weight. OKRs allow me to provide clear targets that get us aligned and help us optimize and prioritize. Our OKRs keep us on track to crush short-term goals, progress towards long-term objectives, and not waste our resources on stuff that doesn’t matter right now.
🥳 Boost morale. If you don’t mark the racecourse, you can’t celebrate crossing the finish line (or even tell when you’re getting closer to it). In other words, I outline clear goals so that everyone knows what they’re working on and why — and so that we can confidently declare victory when we get there! This has a huge impact on morale.
🌍 Empower autonomy. It’s a bit of a paradox, but the structure of OKRs isn’t restrictive in its impact; it frees everyone up. We work from a lot of time zones and locations, but because my team is clear on the fundamentals of what we’re trying to achieve (and what isn’t important right now), each individual can focus on innovating within those parameters. I don’t need to be in the room telling people what’s important; the OKRs have it covered.
Do I have you convinced yet? Are you ready to join me in the land of OKR-enthusiasm?!
If so, tune in tomorrow, when I’ll break down exactly *how* Gatheround does OKRs. We have a specific approach that takes this basic formula and turns it into a goal-setting technique that really works for us. See you there!
