On the last day of this Independence Day weekend I decided tonight to rewatch Saving Private Ryan. I find it important that I remind myself of all the brave soldiers who fought and bled for our liberties and our country. The Letter to Mrs. Bixby drafted by Abraham Lincoln embodies the sentiments much more eloquently than I ever could. If you have never read it, I encourage you to take a moment and take in how difficult it was for President Lincoln to accept the loss that Mrs Bixby had suffered. Richard DiPilla Letter to Mrs. Bixby In the autumn of 1864 Massachusetts Governor John A. Andrew wrote to President Lincoln asking him to express condolences to Mrs. Lydia Bixby, a widow believed to have lost five sons during the Civil War. Lincoln's letter to her was printed by the Boston Evening Transcript. Later it was revealed that only two of Mrs. Bixby's five sons died in battle, Charles and Oliver. Of the remainder, one deserted the army, one was honorably discharged, and another deserted or died a prisoner of war. The authorship of the letter has been debated by scholars, some of whom believe it was written instead by John Hay, one of Lincoln's White House secretaries. Apparently the original letter was destroyed by the newspaper editor after publication or by Mrs. Bixby, who may have been a Confederate sympathizer and disliked President Lincoln. Copies of an early forgery have been circulating for many years, causing some people to believe they possess the original letter. Executive Mansion, Washington, Nov. 21, 1864. Dear Madam,-- I have been shown in the files of the War Department a statement of the Adjutant General of Massachusetts that you are the mother of five sons who have died gloriously on the field of battle. I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save. I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom. Face-to-face interaction allows for a depth of communication that other methods simply can't match. In person, we pick up on subtle cues—body language, facial expressions, tone of voice—that add layers of meaning to the words we say. These non-verbal signals help us gauge reactions and adjust our message in real time, fostering a deeper understanding and #empathy. When we talk in person, we are fully present, which builds #trust and rapport. It's harder to misunderstand someone when you can see their expressions and hear their tone. This kind of engagement is vital in building strong, meaningful #relationships, whether in business or personal contexts. As Marcus Aurelius said, "The art of living is more like wrestling than dancing." In face-to-face communication, we wrestle with ideas, emotions, and reactions, leading to more authentic and effective interactions. The ‘big -wigs’ at the government boat docks had all warned the ‘common fisherman’. ✍️ Beware of the evil ‘Big Bird’. “He will lie, cheat, and steal because he only cares about himself”, they told everyone. They even had game wardens from all over the lands trying to lock him up. You see the bird was bad for their business and that is all they cared about. Besides he was loud and didn’t fly off like other birds they threatened. When Guiseppi and his little dog Indy set out to fish they were told if you see him shoot to kill. As is often the case the motives of the powerful ‘big-wigs’ were not in the best interests of the ecosystem of the land. This code, transcending all others, is a timeless legacy passed down through generations. From parents to grandparents, and so forth, it has been ingrained in us since the dawn of our existence, endowed by our Creator. This moral code is the cornerstone of a civilized society, preventing chaos and fostering harmony. One such example of this code in action can be seen in the gesture of a man who rewards kindness, reflecting the essence of moral goodness. Similarly, another man, objecting to taking more than what he believes he has earned, showcases his integrity and ethical principles. Both men embody the high moral character that our code demands. It is through such actions that we continue to uphold the values passed down to us, ensuring a just and orderly world.
