The clinician shortage has been a macro healthcare trend for several years. The AMA predicts there will be a shortage of over approximately 124,000 physicians by 2034. The recent pandemic exacerbated this challenge. We know that by reducing the administrative burden for clinicians, the propensity for them to enjoy their work and be retained longer increases tremendously. In the study cited here, it is said that "for the average hospital nursing team, one meaningful interaction per team member per month can reduce nurse turnover by 7%." It also says that "recognizing accomplishments and celebrating team members’ personal milestones help team members feel valued and engaged."
We need to do more to improve the clinician experience and deliver work conditions that these caring people expected when they chose to study medicine in school. There are several approaches sited here, and I would add the use of technology and AI key enabler to an improved experience to the list.
It's important we stay focused on improving the clinician experience.
