Hot on the heels of a dramatic but suspicious - I've been told that I can't talk about it as it may prejudice the legal proceedings - draw in the first round at the Market Research Society (MRS) Conference.....AND after a high value bidding war between various pay-per-view operators......the deal has been done and the much-anticipated REMATCH is ON! Thursday 9th May at Quirk's Media London. Refereed again by Lucy Davison armed only with a timer, a whistle and a flak jacket. During the off-season, both teams have been busy in the transfer market and Paul Hudson welcomes Louise Sharpe to his team where he is again assisted by James Sallows, CMRS. I was delighted to hear we were shortlisted for the MRS Oppies for Best Quantitative Data Collection, in partnership with our friends at Face Facts Research. I can remember my first weeks in research, being set the task of finding new and interesting data sources to integrate into our existing approaches because, often, quant studies pointed to a problem, but didn't always include a rich, personal, insight into the solution. I also remember long conversations with the PMs about respondent engagement and data quality. When I moved over to lead research at McCann Central, we decided that it presented an opportunity to change what "quant" meant to us. We also decided to do everything we could to treat a "quanty" respondent in the way we'd treat a "qualy"... as a real person that we had 10-20 minutes of time with. That's why one of the first questions we ask in our quant studies is: "Hi, how are you doing?" What initially felt to some like a gimmick, became a philosophy. We try to spend a bit more time than usual finding out about the person and a bit less asking repetitive questions about the research question. We've found that gives us much richer insights into what they think and feel about brands and communications.
