The strong commitment of local actors and the port authority have helped reduce nuisance for residents and optimize the positive repercussions for the territory. Certain challenges remain to be overcome, notably in terms of decarbonization and biodiversity. But there is a real collective conception of the city-port relationship in Saint-John, with permanent committees, online and real-world consultations, and staff members whose tasks are entirely dedicated to the interaction between the port and urban worlds. Toka Tū Ake EQC has awarded 14 research teams a total of more than $1.2 million in this year’s Biennial Grants round. These research projects aim to help us better understand natural hazard risks and find ways to reduce the impact of those hazards. The objective is to ensure natural hazard resilience becomes embedded in all aspects of decision-making for homes, towns, and cities in Aotearoa New Zealand. Investing in research and translating that will reduce our vulnerability to natural hazard events. Read about the projects being funded here. Public spaces are the places where cities are winning or losing the battle for full post-pandemic recovery. This week I have had the great pleasure of speaking at IMPACT UK and EPRA (European Public Real Estate Association) 2023 Conference on a topic that is incredibly important to our business and to the planet. That of the future of the UK's cities. Cities, or the urban landscape, bring people and places together. But they are also increasingly important to the future health of our planet and its population. Landsec is a purpose driven organisation – a commercially focused business that seeks to make a positive contribution to the wellbeing of people and planet. We believe that an important part of being purpose-led is being purposeful in our actions. Our approach to sustainable development is testament to this approach and an important part of the success of future cities. Just recently we launched in collaboration with British Land our proposals for Government on sustainable brownfield development. This follows on from our Shaping Successful Future Cities report, another collaborative project that looks at the six principles for successful urban development. The scope of the challenge and opportunity here is huge. Design and intention will not be enough. Shaping the successful cities of tomorrow will require strong leadership, long-term vision, collaborative engagement with business and communities, effective policy and good governance.

Puerto Montt and Piraeus have been working on a variety of topics such as Nature-based Solutions (NBS) and participatory planning. Their cooperation also explored the Blue Economy approach as a cross-cutting strategy for urban planning, local economic development, protection of maritime resources, cultural recognition of coastal cities, sea-related productive activities, amongst other. As a result, both cities co-created a Blue Economy Cluster to continue sharing best practices, technical knowledge, applied methodologies and innovative strategies beyond the IURC-LA programme. This cluster aims to maintain communication, coordination, and cooperation between both cities in the long term. It will facilitate the development of new opportunities, capitalizing upon Puerto Montt and Piraeus maritime resources, to consolidate technical and economic exchanges between local stakeholders and municipal teams.
