The transformation of Shanghai’s West Bund from a riverfront industrial hub steeped in history into Asia's largest cultural and artistic district is well underway. As part of the regeneration of the area, we recently completed the adaptive reuse of a dome structure that was part of China’s oldest cement production facility, converting it into a unique event venue. The project, known as the West Bund Art Center, preserves key elements of the historic pre-homogenization plant, like the dome’s steel frame and a conveyor bridge. Meanwhile, new interventions, including translucent cladding, a public foyer, and a viewing gallery, cultivate new forms of use and interaction—from art exhibitions and concerts to sports and cultural events. The project was recently featured in ArchDaily. Check it out: https://lnkd.in/gXwVmJnH Designed by our Shanghai studio, part of SHL - Schmidt Hammer Lassen.

What a brilliant transformation! Keeping the dome’s steel frame and conveyor bridge honors the past, while new elements create vibrant spaces for art, culture, and community events. Kudos to the team on this impressive project!
