Patricia Chin-Sweeney’s Post

Today, 5 years ago, a terrible thing happened. 😔 A group of terrorists with Al-Shabaab descended on 14 Riverside, the office complex where I-DEV International and many others had an office. 🏢 The buildings had risen as a modern business hub for international development, business and trade organizations driving positive change for Africa. Visiting Google HQ staff would stay at the Dusit hotel when in town. Uber's Kenya launch party was there. 🚀 My I-DEV co-founder Jason Spindler was killed that day by a suicide bomber that detonated in a courtyard beside the cafe, where Jason went for a late lunch. (I used to love to sit working from that cafe, staring out onto the green courtyard). The I-DEV team locked themselves, tucked away for hours in the office upstairs, waiting to be rescued from the gunmen. 🕰️ 22 people lost their lives… Not long after this, I met my husband, who had long advocated for Nairobi to improve security - in real vs. 'good optics' ways - and who had helped to manage the crisis that day. My husband and I have since trained many employees, hotel staff as well as young girls in self-defense, counter-terrorism, and active shooter/armed attacker response. 🤝💪 After the attack, I realized how fleeting life can be. I realized the imbalance in my life and the family my business partner never got to have, or the incredible father he'd never get to be. The next two years were about restructuring, recovery, and allowing space to create a family. The last 5 years have been about being an effective changemaker, while also growing into my roles as a good mother and partner (not just a business partner, founder, manag!). 🌟👨👩👧👦 Today, I told my son about his Uncle Jason who was Jewish but had a best friend who was Muslim. His Uncle who was deeply and endlessly compelled to help people rise above poverty, inequality, and hate. Many people did not know Jason as I did, or how much pain it caused him to see the hatred that brewed between people of different religions, backgrounds, colors, educations, mental health, or other health issues - or the consequences that resulted. He saw people for their potential to rise above it, and his (and I-DEV's) role as unlocking the opportunity to shift that course. 🌍❤️ Today, it is disappointing to see all the war, terrorism, have-and-have-not mentality that is killing good and innocent people, sucking them into something they did not choose, and fragmenting society more and more. For the pragmatists, this not only shatters homes, lives, families, but it also poses a risk to supply chains, business operations, costs, staff, botttom line... so whatever you do or whatever keeps you up most at night, please also think about how you can do more to anticipate, preserve, and grow the reality that matters to you- now and in the future. 🌌💼 #ReflectingOnThePast #remembering  #Changemaker #SecurityMatters #timeforchange #consciousbusiness #consciouscapitalism #consciousleadership

Thank you Patricia Chin-Sweeney for reminding us on the events of that tragic day and for sharing your personal journey to recovery. We should never forget. This comes personally very close to me as I celebrated yesterday my son's 18th birthday. On the morning of 19th of January 2019, I had just arrived in Nairobi and was supposed to have a brainstorming session about our ongoing funding round with Jason at 14 Riverside in the early afternoon at the restaurant downstairs. My overnight flight had been a disaster and I ended up cancelling the meeting. That small decision saved my life and I lived to see my beautiful son reach adulthood. So for me this day is a mix of a variety of conflicting emotions. Deep sadness but also relief, with boundless admiration for Jason's incredible work. A beautiful soul that lived his life to the fullest. Leaving us way too early.

May God Bless You Patricia. Yes that was a dark day. I am a Kenyan and know how it felt.I was present in Nairobi though not in the Dusit Hotel vicinity. We pray to God for the safety of our friends our family and our guests visiting our Country. Terrorism has no consciousness. It is just a group of Lost Blinded Souls inflicting pain and harm by evil indoctrined individuals and groups. I also lost a loving friend and Uncle in the 1998 Nairobi Bomb Blast carried out by Al Qaeda back then... Anyway Be Blessed 🙏

Thank you for reminding us of this anniversary and what Jason stood for. I met with Jason at my office on the morning of the attack, we talked about our plans for the year ahead and the silent retreat he had just return from. It is a terrible loss to be without him.

I'm deeply moved by your story and the profound impact of the tragic events you've experienced. The loss of Jason Spindler and others in such a senseless act is a heartbreaking reminder of the fragility of life. It's inspiring to see how you've channeled your grief into positive actions, focusing on training and preparedness to help others. Your journey towards balancing your roles as a changemaker, mother, and partner is a testament to the strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity. Your dedication to remembering Jason's legacy and your efforts to build a safer, more understanding world are truly commendable. May we all learn from your resilience and commitment to making a meaningful difference. 🌍❤️

Thank you for sharing this powerful peace and continueing to honor and remember Jason. I can still remember his amazing smile and the ways his eyes lit up when he was excited about something, which was often. His death was an unspeakable tragedy. One thing I know: he’d be damn proud of his partner for the grace and fortitude and wisdom you have shown ever since that horrific day. Thank you for keeping his memory in the light. I’m raising a class to Jadon and all of those who are working for peace and a better world.

Thank you for sharing this. I can’t believe it has been five years. I love these reflections on family and balance. Huge hugs and love to you Patricia Chin-Sweeney and I will raise a glass to Jason today.

Jason was one of the most wonderful human beings I’ve ever known. His commitment to making the world a better place, his insights and his sense of humor were great gifts. One of my best memories of him was laughing over beers in Boulder about our Peace Corps experiences. Thank you for sharing your journey, Patricia. Meeting you and Jason over ten years ago gave me hope in the future. You are carrying that forward with everyone you work with. And Jason is watching over all of us. He is in all of our hearts and his memory gives me the courage to continue the fight.

This brought me to tears of inspiration Patricia Chin-Sweeney. Hope you are well. Even in just a few short sessions of FMS, Jason inspired so many to join the global force for hope and more equitable economic development.

This should be a wake up call for all the Jews around the world: our only salvation is the creator of this multiverse/simulation/matrix. https://youtu.be/jbxKUwx7ywo?si=esiXQOrkhC9GeifD This song #bringemhomenow is as much for the hostages as it is for all the righteous people from every nation in the world, come home to Israel, get ready for the next #exodus2.0 #exodus2030 Don't make God have to use a miracle to save you when the next biblical event happens. Be smart, use your critical thinking, listen to my music, and set yourself free The world is as corrupt as the times of Abraham and Noah. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst, the next ark is Israel.
