Stellar reporting by Stephanie Nolen for The New York Times Key quote: Children are receiving the vaccine, and for that, I am the happiest man in the world. But on the other hand, I cannot avoid being dismayed at this inexcusably long delay.” — Dr. Joe Cohen, co-inventor of the first malaria vaccine Delay consequence : 143,000. That’s how many children’s deaths could have been averted.

In 2022, over 608,000 people were killed by malaria, 78% of which were children under the age of five. The development of the new cost-effective R21/Matrix-M malaria vaccine, which was recommended by the World Health Organization after it was found to be effective in 70-80% of cases, could completely change the course of malaria driven deaths, saving 450,000 lives per year. It’s critical that this vaccine receive swift prequalifications so we can help prevent millions of cases of malaria and save hundreds of thousands of lives. Read more here: https://lnkd.in/ek2aVDmA

There are not so many good news these days... It is good to hear about the results of the first vaccine to fight malaria. The first vaccine approved to fight malaria cut deaths among young children by 13% over nearly 4 years, according to the World Health Organization. The evaluation of a pilot rollout of the vaccine also showed a 22% reduction in severe malaria in kids young enough to receive a three-shot series. It is significant, as half a million children die of malaria every year. With effective roll out of the vaccine, many children's lives could be saved. However, the vaccine is expensive. The cost of adding the roughly $10 per dose vaccine to existing prevention efforts is a huge burden for many low and middle income countries. How could we make such an important vaccine more affordable? https://lnkd.in/ep2QBZPS

Such hopeful news with this week’s launch of the world's first routine malaria vaccine program in Cameroon. World Health Organization reports that malaria killed more than 600,000 people in 2022, 95% of whom were in Africa, 80% of whom were children under 5. As we learned and shared in CARE's Fast and Fair COVID-19 campaign, which successfully vaccinated 21 million people in 29 countries, fairness, efficiency and equity are essential in global health – and investing in frontline healthcare workers is the best route to achieving all three. Big #Malaria Milestone The World Health Organization recommended a second #vaccine against malaria yesterday, boosting hopes the new tool will help reduce the nearly 500,000 malaria deaths among African children each year. The R21/Matrix-M vaccine, like the RTS,S vaccine which earned WHO’s 2021 recommendation, has been found safe and effective, per a WHO statement. What you need to know about R21: It reduced symptomatic cases by 75% in the year following a 3-dose series in areas of high seasonal transmission. It had 66% efficacy when given on an age-based schedule. A fourth dose maintained efficacy when given a year after the third dose. Each dose costs $2-$4. #OneHealth #PublicHealth #VectorBorne https://lnkd.in/g-YrjeDG

The news from #WHO cannot be understated: having a second vaccine to prevent malaria in children will save countless lives. We are thrilled to be working with malaria-endemic countries to help them leverage both malaria vaccines -- which are most effective when deployed along with all of our other tools like bed nets, indoor residual spraying, etc -- to prevent malaria in children. https://lnkd.in/eGxf8-A3
