If you believe like Leonardo da Vinci did that simplicity is the ultimate sophistication and you can appreciate the directness of the And, But, Therefore story structure but it feels a bit too woo-woo for you – I mean how can you possibly measure its impact – then this conversation is for you. Did you know that you can actually quantify how compelling your communication is before you publish or present it by using one simple tool? Randy Olson, my co-author of The Narrative Gym for Business, has created and tested a brilliant story-measuring device called the Narrative Index. It measures the But-to-And ratio in your story. The more "Buts" you have versus "Ands" the more contradiction and conflict you create and the more compelling your message becomes to the primal problem-solving, decision-making *buying* limbic brain. The ABT story framework is too simple. It can’t possibly work. Over the years, I've heard countless arguments against using something as simple as the ABT. Some of these pushbacks came back to me as I read Morgan Housel’s "Same as Ever: A Guide to What Never Changes".
