Europe's biggest geothermal project is in Aarhus. Now it can led the way for new projects all over Europe. Last week I joined a delegation from Poland. They were visiting the geothermal drilling site in my constituency in Aarhus to see, if it has potential in their city of Poznan. Aarhus and Poznan are similar in population and both have extensive district heating systems. However, today around 80 % of Poznan's district heating is based on coal. Geothermal energy can help decrease this number! This is exactly why we need a geothermal strategy in Europe, so the good practices from Aarhus can reach not only Poznan, but also rest of Europe. I worked on getting this message through to the Commission in the European Parliament's report on geothermal energy in Europe. With the help of my Danish colleagues Morten Helveg Petersen and Pernille Weiss we managed to make quite a strong call for this. With the Energy Efficiency Directive we sat targets for Europe to decarbonize its district heating and cooling sector. Geothermal energy holds a huge potential in getting the jo done. Therefore I am eager to push this technology and others than can help us meet our climate goals.
