Managing Director @ Phaidon International | Talent Advisors and Specialist Recruiters to over 3000 Companies | Placing 8000 Business Critical Hires Across 3 Continents

This is shocking. Only 9% of engineering executives at start ups hired between 2019-2023 are women and only 16% of ALL engineering hires are women. So here's the problem on top of this. % of women founders has declined this year to 13%. Senior Female hires get less equity on average Female founders get less or lower funding rounds. Most tech start up founders are white men (54%). This is where the VC $$ are going. 90% will fail - but of the 10% that survive there will be a number of these firms who are the multi billion $$ unicorns of tomorrow. These are the founders who will be the companies shaping technology and our lives in the future. We are hearing from many start ups we talk to who are actively hiring, "I'm focusing on hiring from my network." I understand funding runway, I understand the environment we are in, Recruiting fees aren't cheap if you use a good external recruiter. But you can't expect to hire any type of diverse team if you are just hiring your other white male bros from Stanford, Harvard or your previous start up. It's a vicious cycle. It needs to be broken. This is both a commercial and moral imperative. We specialize in hunting down the best diverse talent in the world. If you actually believe that this is important for your business vs virtue signaling use an external recruiter who will broaden your network. (you will probably make a better overall hire too!) Don't even get me started on the data around black and hispanic representation in start ups! This is deeply concerning. We need to break the cycle and build a more diverse and inclusive tech industry.

Agreed, this was one of the more dispiriting numbers in the entire report. Appreciate you flagging it, Oliver
