Question of the month: Will AI replace GTM teams or enhance them? Answer: Both. It's a polarizing topic because it’s nuanced. That is, the answer to how to leverage AI differs depending on team size, motion, model, etc. I’ve listened to dozens of calls and noticed a few patterns in how GTM leaders are thinking about adopting AI to augment their team or motion. Patterns of adoption by team size: 🖖 Enterprise (think 1k plus GTM team) They have a lot of data. That data is often proprietary. And it’s also a mess. AI can help make sense of it. It can tell these teams which accounts are ripe for expansion and which are at churn risk. It can find similarities in customer calls, emails, product usage, and other signals to inform where to invest and what actions to take. 🏗️ Growth (think 50+ GTM team) They have established GTM teams but still need to acquire new logos to win market share. That means hunting for new prospects and scaling their GTM teams efficiently. AI can help these teams by capturing and making sense of buying signals, surfacing the best prospects to reps, and using that context to craft a personalized outbound that converts. AI does the tedious work, and humans do the last mile bit. 🌱 Early stage (think 1+ GTM team) They don’t have a lot to lose. They also don’t have a ton of runway and a high expectation to grow fast or die. AI can help with full-on automation. One AI-savvy person pulling the strings can run a better version of the predictable revenue playbook at scale than a team of ten could just a few years ago. +++ The common threads? 🧵 Signals matter ➡ that is, the data that feeds the model makes all the difference in performance—**quality in, quality out.** Humans are still the loop ➡ even when orchestration occurs at an early stage, AI is not complete on autopilot. The last mile (think fully autonomous driving) is the hardest part. Efficiency gains ➡ AI reduces the tedious, time-consuming parts of selling (think research, context gathering, cold-start copywriting). All of that means more time to take calls, more time to move deals along, and more time to close.

Analyzed GPS data on millions of daily commutes comparing pre to post pandemic with Alex Finan. Key findings: 1) Super-commuting is up. Journeys above 75 miles rose about 1/3. WFH allows folks to live further away, so a longer but less frequent commute. 2) Traffic speeds about 10% faster as more WFH means less congestion. Mean speeds 27.3 MPH pre-pandemic vs 29.5 MPH post-pandemic. This benefits everyone, even those who do not WFH. 3) Biggest jumps in super-commuting in New York, Washington DC and Phoenix - large suburbs with expensive city centers. Thank you Gary DeBerry for the kind words. Too many sales leaders rely on data because: it's easy , and it's safe. It's a lot easier looking at an AE's activity on a CRM dashboard than flying out and joining them for a client meeting. It's also safer making a decision based solely on the CRM dashboard, because you can blame the data if the decision turns out wrong in hindsight. But here's the real question: are you losing great salespeople because your data isn't telling you the full story? And on top of that, are you moving too slowly because you're waiting for the data to dictate your next move? I’d love to hear your thoughts on this ✍️.

Two posts I shared with my team this week about LLM's impact on SaaS. SaaS has always been about solving a problem. Engineers I interview often ask me "Why spend so much time on the LLM stuff?". Aka, "Why are we working on all the hard stuff that is barely working, when there's plenty of problems to be solved the old way?". Brett Queener's tweet about the UI. He talks about a world where most of a software product's user interface will be a prompt or a recommendation. "..its far better user experience than forcing people to hunt and peck across your tabs, list views, form views and dashboard for them to get done what they want to. It also means that what you used to compete on / differentiate on traditionally (I have these capabilities / better easier to use screens / yada yada yada) are kinda irrelevant" Matt Turck's LinkedIn post, "Is SaaS dead?" SaaS vendors are currently perceived as “last generation” despite best efforts to add AI quickly. Customers trying to build themselves, since it's pretty easy to get started.
