During the 2024 National Football League (NFL) 2024 Super Bowl there has been an astonishing new media which took the center stage for the very first time, adding a local powerful booster for the Brands which chose to invest on the most important sport event in the world. I’m talking about the La Vegas Sphere, a unique phygital entertainment venue, the most expensive ever built, worth $2,3 billion, that doubles as a globe-shaped LED billboard. How much did the advertisers pay for a 90 second spot displayed on the Exosphere, the Sphere’s exterior? The cost ranges from $1 million to $2 million. The Sphere will cycle through the ads each day, featuring Super Bowl-related art in between. Among the Brands which have chosen this innovative outdoor media there are FedEx , adidas , AB Inbev, Lowe's Companies, Inc., Nike, Paramount and Verizon. Once again, the perfect partnership ingredients in action 👇 A few weeks ago I noted now the recipe for the best partnership activations: 1 part on pitch relevance 1 part timing 1 part bravery 1 part surprise 1 part simplicity Add a sprinkling of humour And if available, a complementary partner This weekend we had another wonderful execution example this time between Cincinnati Bengals receiver Ja'Marr Chase and 7-Eleven. The context is brilliant. 2 weeks ago, after setting a new Bengals' single-game record with 15 catches during a game, Chase tweeted, "7/11," with a photo of the store. Chase had told reporters after the Bengals' loss to the Titans, "I'm open. I'm always f---ing open.". "Always open" being a tagline of 7/11. The 7/11 team jumped at the opportunity. Quickly partnering with Chase and launching a collection in time for the game this gone weekend, where he wore a 7/11 pendant. Of course slightly ridiculous, but brilliant. Naturally, the pendant has already sold out. But better than that, it made 7/11 highly relevant in a moment that could have easily passed. A key takeaway I had from watching the Shohei Ohtani: Beyond the Dream film on ESPN+ I wanted to highlight is how the brands that partner with the players, teams, and stadiums see a continuous ROI from the brand exposure and improved brand image from associating directly with the main interests of the fans. In the image below, State Farm is seen with lower bowl signage at Angel Stadium. While there is incredible value in having branded assets directly viewable in the stadium and on TV, an under appreciated and continuously growing value of this and assets alike lie in the highlights, series, and films that current and potentially new fans are consuming and engaging with. Knowing that a Hall of Fame player is stepping on the field or an instant-classic game is set to take place, the long term value of an asset is instantly increased. From decades prior, Coca-Cola's field signage at Yankee Stadium is instantly visible in highlights shown in this film and elsewhere. Fortunately for them, the dominance of the Yankees in that era directly result in greater views of highlights, and thus a continued ROI for Coca-Cola. Congruent with the trend of more and more sports features being produced and released, could we see production companies leverage screen time for various brands shown in footage for monetary or additional compensation to potentially to finance additional projects? Back to the Shohei Ohtani film, it gracefully encapsulates the influential people and defining moments that led to the greatest success story of the most unique and skilled player in baseball (and arguably of all sports) history. Let's think about what value add this might drive for emerging and fast-growing sports such as Padel or Pickle or what this might enable the growth of football in the US to achieve, for instance... Otherwise, in by-passing the community and connection and jumping to private equity $, luxury, high-price points and league elitism we miss the point... Want to grow your sport in new markets? Care about long term viability, connection and sustainability? Or does short-term revenue generation trump everything? These are key considerations for sports and it takes brave and bold leadership to make choices that might mean value is generated over a longer term period than being recognised immediately.
