30 yrs working in & for the care sector. A specific interest & expertise in commissioning & procuring services for children in care. Led a review of the national fostering contract. Views personal.
An important campaign Most children need and want to remain close to families, friends and communities. Much more is needed to make this happen, but it’s not just about creating more capacity. This week I heard that in one local authority 25% of one providers care options in the area are not available to the local authority (when vacant). There are various reasons why some options can’t be accessed. (It’s important not to make assumptions about those). I’m fully behind the fundamental principle behind this campaign. We must place children close to home where that’s right, wanted and needed. Developing more local supply is vital, regardless of who does that. But unless the issues around access and use are tackled, the problem with some children being placed far from home will continue. It would be good to see the campaign raising greater awareness of that.
📍 It’s been one year since we launched #GoneTooFar: Our campaign to keep children in care close to the people and places that matter to them. We've reflected on our highlights from the campaign so far, such as meeting Ministers, debates in the House of Lords, Channel 4 coverage & more... We’re calling on the Government to: 🛣️ Commit to stop children being moved miles from home (unless in their best interests) 📒 Develop and publish national and local strategies to increase the supply of appropriate local options, so that children don’t have to be moved miles away from their support networks. ➡️ See what we've achieved so far: https://lnkd.in/eEY6emZn

#ChildProtection As a society, we must prioritize child protection to ensure that every child has the opportunity to grow and thrive. Child Protection is a paramount concern that requires collective efforts to safeguard the well-being and rights of children. Every child deserves a safe and nurturing environment, free from abuse, exploitation, and neglect. Moreover, empowering children to recognize and report abuse is crucial in fostering a protective environment. Encouraging open communication and creating safe spaces for children to express their concerns are essential steps in this process. By actively promoting child protection, we can create a society where children are safe, cherished, and allowed to reach their full potential. Let us all join hands and work together to build a world where every child is protected and cherished. UNICEF uses the term child protection to refer to the prevention of and response to exploitation, abuse, neglect, harmful practices and violence against children. For example commercial and sexual exploitation, trafficking, child labour and harmful traditional practices. Child protection have some safeguarding principles , meaning actions that are taken to promote the welfare of children and protect them from harm. They are so many of these principles but they will be grouped under six headings *Empowerment *Protection *Prevention *Proportionality *Partnership *Accountability. We will examine one after another of these six principles and we will see how Napmaac Cameroon carries out each of the principles of child protection as mentioned above. This will also help us to understand the need to protect children and our contributions towards helping them build a better future. UNICEF Save the Children US

Save the Children International and The Johns Hopkins University conducted a study in Colombia and Lebanon, focused on the effectiveness of CVA in reducing 📉 child protection risks such as child labour and violence. In Colombia, the overall effect of CVA on perceived safety & wellbeing of children was predominantly positive, particularly on safety within the home. In Lebanon, improvements were also observed in the corrective measures used by caregivers to discipline their children, which was used as a proxy for violence in the home. An overall improvement was observed as well during the study period, with a significant decrease in child labour. Learn more about the impact of CVA on child protection here: https://calp.net/3IvMgIT

Building strategic partnerships that 1) help people around the world access clean water and sanitation and 2) help companies achieve their ESG & Sustainability goals.
More than 100 years ago, Save the Children International founder Eglantyne Jebb drafted the first ‘Declaration of the Rights of the Child’. As we mark World Childrens Day, more than 100 years later, we desperately need a reminder that it is out collective bargaining duty to ensure that: 1. Every child should be given what they need to grow up happy and healthy. 2. When a child is hungry, they must be fed. When they are sick, they must be cared for. And when they need support, shelter or guidance, they must be given it. 3. Whenever there is a crisis, children should be the first to receive aid. 4. Every child should be protected against exploitation, and given the chance to earn a living, when the time comes. 5. Every child should grow up understanding the importance of using their talents and skills to help others. #stopthewaronchildren #savethechildren #hungercrisis #worldchildrensday
