1wTraining at 7000 feet in the beautiful pine forests of Northern Arizona is optimal for athletes competing on a world class scale. Former NAU Sports Information Director the late Wylie Smith gave me an insight when I attended NAU 1978-82 when he told me the story of the Kenyan National Team team featuring the immortal Kip Keino stopping in Flagstaff to train en route to the 1968 Summer Olympic Games in Mexico City to emulate the altitude of the Mexican capital city. Of course Kip Keino not only avenged his year prior loss to American 1500 meter running star Jim Ryun at White City Stadium in London, Keino destroyed the world class 1500 meter field with a stunning effort at that distance to win the gold medal validating that the stopover in Flagstaff was worth the effort. I can vouch that no distance running training can be more fulfilling than altitude training in Flagstaff. Let me also add that the NAU Cross Cross Country team is nationally renowned on par with similar excellence of University of Alabama football and Duke University basketball.
