Books by and about the LGBTQ+ community are the most frequent targets of bans at public schools and libraries across the country. And these challenges explicitly state that young people shouldn’t be exposed to LGBTQ+ material. An extension of this thinking is evident in attempts by policymakers nationwide to prohibit drag shows and banning gender-affirming care. They’re also pushing to allow the deadnaming of transgender students or adults in the workplace, as well as other measures that target LGBTQ+ people. Which is why it’s essential to fight against book banning. Because books have the ability to give us a glimpse into lives and experiences other than our own. And as a result, see those whose life experience is different from ours as fellow human beings rather than a frightening Other. So, read a book from the ALA’s Rainbow List in support of Pride Month. Or choose from books that have received the Stonewall Book Award. But don’t limit choices from these lists to the month of June, show support for Pride year-round. We're so happy to represent so many speakers all across the LGBTQ+ community. For Pride Month, we've been featuring some of their fresh, new perspectives. And today, we have YouTuber, writer, and digital activist Jackson Bird. This quote from Jackson feels especially relevant with the recent rise of LGBTQ+ representation in film. According to GLAAD's most recent annual study tracking the quantity, quality, and diversity of queer representation in media, of the 350 films tracked, over 28% contained at least one LGBTQ+ character—the highest percentage covered in the 11 years GLADD has conducted the survey. The number of trans characters also hit a record high (albeit, that number was only 12). LGBTQ+ representation in media has certainly been improving, but there's still a ways to go. For instance, over half of the LGBTQ+ characters in the study had less than five minutes of screentime. As we push towards greater equality and liberation, let's remember that, as Jackson says, the most surefire way of telling more and better queer stories is by hiring more queer creators. Pride Month starts today, and I have some thoughts to share. It’s very easy to think that we’ve made significant progress, that equality has been achieved, with pride month a time for rainbows, glitter and ABBA. Unfortunately, it took only a few scrolls of a local shopping park’s pride month post to make it abundantly clear that there is still so much to fight for. Three years ago I participated in a Pride video for Network Rail titled “Do I Offend You” and three years later unfortunately I think my existence along with my other LGBTQ+ family still offends others. We are still told not to shove it down throats, that we should keep our queerness “to ourselves” or “at home”, or asked with sly smiles when straight pride month is. As a queer person during pride month I ask my allies to of course enjoy and support a pride parade. However please don’t just participate in the fun consumerist parts of pride. Please reflect on your allyship in a time where our rights are being constantly threatened. The UK has dropped to its lowest ever rating on the ILGA-Europe map over the last theee years, due to the limitations on gender affirming care and failures to deliver on the banning of conversion practices. All too often the LGBTQ+ community, particularly the Trans community, are used as political cannon fodder, despite making up 5% and 0.5% of the population respectively. This has resulted in hate crimes increasing by over 100% to the LGBTQ+ community over the last five years. And lastly, we are not free until we are all free. Intersectionality is fundamental and critical to achieving true equality, equity, diversity and inclusion. Sometimes that requires decentering ourselves from the conversation which can be challenging however is necessary to be better and make real change. Think on how you can make space for marginalised voices in your workplaces and communities. And I’ll leave it at that along with a link to Stonewall who continue to do great work and have some must have reading for Pride Month. Remember, Equality is not a pie, there is plenty to go around. Rainbow washing, as defined by Urban Dictionary, is: “The act of using or adding rainbow colors and/or imagery to advertising, apparel, accessories, landmarks… in order to indicate progressive support for LGBTQ equality but with a minimum of effort or pragmatic result.” During June, companies that engage in rainbow washing will transform into colourful hubs, with bright, rainbow versions of their logo on social media without paying (or underpaying) the queer talent involved. That’s why Hila Narducci and I have created the first online database where companies can find LGBTQI+ talents from all creative fields to hire, all in one place. Let's talk about Pride washing 🏳️🌈 June is Pride Month - an annual month event dedicated to celebration and commemoration of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) pride. The extended period creates time for a wide range of events, marches, and discussions to take place, which provide opportunities for the LGBTQ+ community to come together and make their voices heard. In this video, Building Inclusion author Marsha Ramroop FRSA FIEDP describes the session she attended with Adam Nathaniel Furman (Hon FRIBA), put on by Russell Pollard, MBA from Framework Leadership, about queer spaces and queer leadership. Marsha talks about how important places of solace are for the community and how it allows expression to thrive. Marsha also talks about how companies are now more worried about being accused of pride washing, and how it is being viewed as tokenism. June was PRIDE month and, all around the world, LGBTQ+ folks and allies celebrated what it means to be diverse, unique and proud of our identities. We at UWC also shared some great links from Radiolab’s Lulu Miller about her investigation into queer identity in the U.S. But every month is the right month to celebrate our vibrant diversity, our acceptance and compassion, and our personal power. It’s always time to be proud of how we are. With that in mind, we wanted to pick some LGBTQ+ centered resources to highlight from our Ideas to Action field guide. While our guide has a specific pathway on exploring different personal identities, including LGBTQ+, we’re looking today at the ‘Historical structures’ pathway, because understanding history–how and why structures developed and evolved–is integral to our ability to reforge and reform those structures, as well as build new ones. The first resource, an LGBTQ Rights Timeline in American History, is a great tool for anyone teaching about LGBTQ issues or who just wants to learn more. Othering trans people is not respecting trans people. Today marks the start of LGBTQ+ History Month. Whilst we learn and raise awareness of queer history, let's make sure we do not repeat history by making the same mistakes. Let's start with the trans community who, right now, are under attack worldwide...simply for existing. Simply for daring to ask for equality and equity. The struggles we face are similar to those of our elders...so why have we learned nothing? (Btw, no idea why a tiny bit of the audio disappears before magically reappearing.
