Time constraints in modern medicine I've heard clients share some fascinating stories about the challenges they face in their medical practice. Picture this: some have actually been scolded for taking too much time to engage with their patients, as if building a strong patient-doctor connection is a luxury! Others have been advised to rush through procedures, cutting short the questions and interactions that foster trust. And as if that weren't enough, the pandemic has cast an ominous shadow, intensifying mistrust among patients. The precious moments to truly connect with those we serve have dwindled, leaving us with this palpable sense of distance between doctors and their patients, something that wasn't as prominent in years gone by. “What perspective are you bringing to this?” I was asked this question recently and I actually love it! Our perspectives are the lens through which we see the world and approach our life’s work. We each have a different lens, shaped by our personal and professional experiences and belief systems. How do I look at the healthcare system? Through a lens shaped by the following: * angle 1: clinical pharmacist serving in a variety of settings, including hospital, outpatient clinics, and even a bit of retail * angle 2: wife of a physician husband, witnessing the entirety of his medical training from pre-med to the MCAT to residency and beyond * angle 3: caregiver and advocate for my father who was diagnosed with cancer * angle 4: healthcare business owner * angle 5: private patient advocate for the last 7 years going deeper with patients than I’ve ever gone before * angle 6: Radical Remission Coach, helping patients facing cancer incorporate the 10 healing factors found from Dr. Turner’s research * angle 7: author of a forthcoming book on patient empowerment and ownership of our health * angle 8: podcast host for the past 5 years on all topics related to mind, body and spirit I could likely add to this, but my point is this - my perspective isn’t better. It’s simply different. Many people are making impactful change in the medical field and beyond with a much different background and lens than mine. I think it’s important that those who choose to work with us know more than our names and titles - they deserve to understand the lens through which we see the problem and ultimately create a solution 💕

Could a medical error happen to you? I was reflecting on a recent panel discussion on patient empowerment and thinking about the stories the panelists and audience shared with me about their experiences with medical error. Having lost one friend to a medical error and nearly lost another, these stories resonated with me. I’m grateful to the teams at Littleton Road Philanthropy, NBC, Peacock, Dr. Death and The Atlantic for taking a provocative case of medical misconduct to shine a light on patient empowerment. While the story in Dr. Death is fascinating and well told, it is an extreme example - one that few of us will ever encounter. On the other hand, many people don’t realize that, well meaning health professionals make mistakes every day. Medical errors are one of the leading causes of mortality in the United States. While many of the attempts to address this issue have been centered around health professionals, Patients can also empower themselves.
