Are they so fearful of losing income that they'd forfeit their future earning potential and career opportunities just to work for someone who reeks of insecurity and demanding they sign one? I've been approached three times to sign such agreements, and three times I've flatly refused. And you know what? Nothing happened. And even if those employers had let me go, guess what? Three weeks later, I'd likely have found new employment with a better salary. Let's talk about the controversial "gotcha" interview question! 👹 As a candidate, I've dreaded these questions due to their unexpected nature. As an interviewer, I strive to avoid them, focusing instead on aligning experience, attitude, aptitude, and cultural fit. However, I believe "gotcha" questions can be beneficial when asked thoughtfully and with good intentions. When faced with a "gotcha" question, you have to think on your feet and support your answer with context (facts, stories, etc.). The focus should be on how you arrive at your answer, not the answer itself. Using "gotcha" questions this way allows interview teams to assess your critical thinking and how you handle unexpected situations. Do you agree/disagree? I have been seeing/reading quite a few posts where recruiters and candidates are getting frustrated within this job market. As well as candidates asking me for assistance on their resumes in order to fit job requirements. Here are a couple of suggestions for “YOU” the candidate that may help. ✅ Please make sure you read the entire job description thoroughly. The descriptions should show the responsibilities/requirements (qualifications) needed, education/certification needs, years of experience and location (state, remote/hybrid/onsite). ✅ If the position states US Citizen, that’s ONLY what the company is seeking. ✅ If the position states US Person, that means Citizen of the US or Green Card Holder ONLY. ✅ If the position requires any type clearance it will state in the job description. ✅ Please make sure your resumes meet all the requirements, if not at least 90%. Most companies only keyword search and if don’t have the requirements they pass you over. ✅ Proofreading your resume also helps. Check your grammar, spelling, fonts, bullets etc. ✅ If you actually apply to a job requisition and the recruiter reaches out, please respond. Hope this helps! Let's talk about Resume Format for a minute... This seems to be a #hottopic and there's a lot of mixed opinions about it, so as someone who looks at hundreds of resumes daily, someone who writes resumes, someone who coaches on effective resume construction, and a hiring manager lens... here's some things to think about... 1.) Is the creative "flair" of your resume format distracting the reader from finding or seeing the impact you've made in your career? Impact is key! 2.) Can you open your resume from an email on your phone and still read it appropriately? ~This is a BIG ONE! If you cannot open your resume from your email on your phone and EASILY scroll down your phone to read it... you're setting yourself up for failure. ~Hiring managers will open your resume on their phone in between meetings. Or while sitting in a meeting where their laptop is being used for the Zoom call, so they open your resume on their phone to multi-task... and if they can't read it (the words are on top of each other, the formatting changes, they cannot make sense of your work history because everything got jumbled up), you might not be selected for an interview. Simply put, they may choose the candidate who's resume was easily readable on their phone. ~It could literally make the difference in being selected for an interview. 3.) Is your contact information on it? (but seriously, I cannot tell you how many resumes I've seen without any phone number or email address, only a linkedin profile link) This does NOT help a recruiter reach out to you! I'm not sure who told you that you shouldn't have your contact information on your resume... but if you actually WANT A JOB, make it easy for people to call, text, or email you about opportunities. Please! 4.) Delete dates off degrees (this opens you up to age discrimination). Bachelor's degree in 1984 ("wow, that was 40 years ago"). Bias... both conscious & unconscious bias live within the dates on degrees... Don't shoot the messenger, just learn to make your resume work FOR YOU and not against you. 5.) Do not list references by name with phone numbers. Instead, get a simple impactful quote from each of them, and display one of those quotes directly on your resume. "Allison is an incredible resource for us, she immediately found nursing talent during a nursing shortage to serve our patients. Our operators request her by name for their hard to fill positions! -Sr. VP of TA" Of course, I could go on and on... but I feel these 5 fundamentals will give you a great head-start in formatting your resume the right way for recruiters and hiring managers! Works well under pressure... There was a time when this was on almost every resume out there. It has its place because there are people you want working by your side when life hits the fan, and there are those who don't do well with deadlines and crisis mode breathing down their necks. I am the person you want in the trenches with you when it's go time, but let one minor inconvenience show up in my plan or my schedule, and it's tailspin time. That's me: great in a crisis, useless when one minor detail of my day makes my day a hiccup. So, this is an accurate representation for those of you who have never had the distinct pleasure of working with me. The recruiting process isn’t broken … Because there is no recruiting process. Every recruiter, hiring manager, and company has their own flow and process. I know it’s easy to feel like the system is broken, people are out here applying for thousands of jobs, some have been out of full time work for over a year - some of those people are recruiters. Example - I posted a remote business analyst role , with no clearance, and a decent salary for the requirements. It got 300 applications in two days, and the ATS we currently use doesn’t allow us to take it down until we close it or hire to it. We could only hire one person. We ended up having to decline 410 applicants. Regardless of how many amazing applicants we got, we could only hire one person. There are fewer recruiters, and more applicants than ever. The entire job market is in a lull, but this is what the market does. It ebbs and flows, and right now we’re in a pretty deep ebb. NEW PLAN!! Instead of writing “dear recruiters” posts and yelling at an entire industry over things you don’t (won’t?) understand, I have a suggestion. Do a quick search for anyone “disrupting” or “transforming” recruiting. Tell them ALL THE WAYS you want recruiting to be better. Walk them through all the things recruiters have said and done that you loathe. Tell THEM to fix it. Give THEM the feedback on our terrible tools and processes. They’ve got the funding and the will to build solutions (especially the ones we don’t want, will never use, and didn’t ask for in the first place). I’ve got 70 reqs, exhausted hiring managers, and shit to do. As for me, I’m going to continue doing the best I can with what I have. I’ll continue to champion change from the inside. I’ll sign up to beta test every new feature my team dreams up for our (actually pretty good) ATS. I’ll make feature requests and network internally with folks who care about this as much as I do. Y’all can solve the rest. Because NOBODY knows what recruiters SHOULD do better then the people who’ve never DONE it. 🤣

Looking for a new position 👀 on Indeed? Using Indeed's FREE resume function? Here are a few tips from someone who looks at Indeed resumes all day: ✔ Make sure you put an "end date" when filling out/creating an Indeed resume. If not, all of your positions will show "present" and look like you're working at multiple companies! ✔ Utilize the "part time" and/or "full time" differentiator when building the resume. This can clear up any confusion of you working multiple full-time positions at the same time. ✔ Make sure your contact information and city/state are updated! I've had tons of people interested in jobs but have incorrect information on their resume - it makes you very hard to reach to set up interviews.. ✔ Be sure to create an Indeed resume in addition to uploading your formatted resume (if you have one). #Indeed resumes use a uniform format so recruiters/hiring managers know where to look for things. Often times the PDF/Word document of your resume is microscopic and not always upload correctly. ✔ Select what type of work you're looking for when you upload your resume. Recruiters can filter for candidates looking for part time, full time, and contract work just like you do when job searching! If you have a phone screen with a recruiter and want to stand out? TAKE NOTE ✍ I had a phone screen scheduled with a candidate today and I started the day with an email from them preparing me for the conversation by sharing: ⭐ Why they're a good fit for the job ⭐ Why they're interested in the company ⭐ Some personal hobbies and interests This gave me so much more information about the candidate than just their resume and made me really excited for the conversation. For this position, there's over 100 applicants. This candidate made the extra effort to stand out - and it WORKED for me! 🚨 PS - All Recruiters are different and some may not find it helpful for a candidate to do this. I'm simply sharing a tactic that can show your passion for a role and company before even getting on a call with the team. I think the biggest mistake people can make in an interview is being too honest. Crazy right?! The thing I have seen a lot from interviewing. Is admitting "I don't know something" and leaving it at that. Killing the interview and your chances of obtaining the job. But, chances are that you do know! Many job seekers have experienced a scenario in a job that can properly answer the question given to them in an interview. Try this: Practice answering questions with how YOU would solve for something that "you don't know." Give them an example that you were a part of, use the STAR method to assist you. Tell them direct impact, what you learned from the example, what you would have done to optimize the result. Good hiring team is looking for candidates who can be coachable especially in lower level positions. Take ownership of the example to answer the question! Sometimes, being close to the example is as good experience as being the executor of the example. Smart people learn from their own mistakes, but wise people learn from the mistakes of others as well! This kind of approach could be terrible advice or, it might get you a job. I know no one likes this, but I believe you can be overqualified for a job - and it is a valid reason to pass on a candidate. Before you get your pitchfork - keep reading... Companies write job requirements for a litany of reasons. These are the minimum qualifications needed to be successful upon starting the job; they align with the budget for the role, but these aren't always it, nor the most important one to me (and yes, this is something I consult with my managers on where appropriate) The current skills inventory and gaps on the team. When creating a diverse team, it is more than looking at race, gender, ethnicity, socio-economic background, religion, etc - it is also the level of experience. Not to mention creating succession plans, long-term projections, growth opportunities, and career development. I will always stan for stratified and diverse talent organs that showcase talent at every level - even if that means prioritizing those with less experience in the roles that are written for them. Please note that the mid-sr level folks are just as important, and the shoot-your-shot trope is just as bad as there is no such thing as overqualified. #recruiterlife

What’s up with the yo-yo? 🪀 Keep reading… Function over flash! When you are crafting your resume you may consider using templates that have lots of colors, designs and multiple columns. I would discourage using those right off the bat and focus on a well crafted resume. Using flashy resumes can often get altered after you upload it for an application. Then when the recruiter or manager reviews your resume it looks messy or worse, is unreadable. Additionally, many people craft their resume in a way that doesn’t portray their true talent or skills. You have 3 candidates for a Yo-yo maker🪀…A, B and C. Which candidate would you consider based on their resume bullet? Candidate A: Responsible for making Yo-yos (Most resumes state this) Candidate B: Top Yo-yo maker on my team (some resumes have this) Candidate C: Produced an average of 400 Yo-yos a month, 40% above exceptional standard with a quality rating of 98.6%. (Few resumes have this) Always try to quantify your experience and showcase your talents. You know you’re great, show the manger that! IF YOU CANT TALK ABOUT IT, DON’T WRITE ABOUT IT As a recruiter more often than not we see skills in the technical section of a resume and we sometimes wonder if that candidate has actually worked all of those skills. Qualifying a candidate based on their resume and skills is an important part of a recruiters job, while most recruiters are not going to be experts on every skill that is listed on a resume, as a recruiter it is our job to make sure that we match the skills on the resume with the required skills of the position that we are recruiting for. As a candidate for a position and submitting your resume to that position, it is very important that you are able to talk to the skills that you have listed. It is important that the skills you have listed are shown in the positions that you held and how you used them. A lot of time can be wasted on the recruiter side if we have to reach out to the candidate to ask them to update their resume to show how they used those particular skills. In other words, don’t put a skill on your resume if you have only been familiar with or have knowledge of, unless you state that in your skills list. When you don’t do this, the recruiter will spend more time than necessary to qualify you and in the end, if you can’t talk about it, don’t write about it. My number one tip for resumes is readability. Make sure it's in a format that can be easily and quickly read by a human or a robot. That means all the fancy formatting that Word suggests is out and less exciting but very effective formatting is in. If you need help with making your resume as strong as it can be, I do resume inexpensive resume reviews and all the money goes to my tattoo fund! #resumetips #resumereview
