Far more Gen Z will be eligible to vote this year, but what will it take to get them to the polls? It's estimated that 40 million + members of Gen Z will be eligible to cast a ballot this fall. Young voters are about one-fifth of the U.S. electorate. In presidential election years, voters aged 18 to 29 generally have higher turnout than they do in non-presidential years. For example, turnout for this age group increased by 3.4% from the 2016 to the 2020 general election. As Gen Z connects the dots between their daily struggles and what’s on the ballot, young voters are joining the civic engagement conversation in greater numbers. Both to express their support for candidates and to hold them accountable. But how do we ensure eligibility translates to action at the polls? By November, about 60% of Gen Z will be eligible to vote in New York’s general election. But will they? Data trends suggest: no. Eligible voters under 30 are a majorly underrepresented group of voters in New York, making our Youth Ambassador program, especially during a critical election year, more relevant and impactful than ever. In this program, youth will immerse themselves in the world of local democracy. Ambassadors will learn how to host Get Out The Vote events across NYC and gain the skills needed to help increase voter participation in their own communities. Representing NYC’s diversity, this year's NYC Votes Youth Ambassadors speak 9 different languages, with over half fluent in languages other than English. The NYC Votes Youth Ambassador program is just one step toward ensuring youth voices are included in our city’s democracy. https://lnkd.in/eBwgXsSf

We’re zooming into our city’s community data. What does this have to do with voting? Key stats, like age, income, and education level can tell us about civic engagement disparities across the city. Recently, we published NYC’s first ever Community Profiles. This project is a deep dive into each neighborhood’s highly unique demographics. Local democracy shapes our day-to-day lives in NYC. But, despite 82% of eligible voters being registered, very few New Yorkers vote in local elections. By aligning local elections with state and federal elections (which consistently see higher turnout), we can: ✓ Increase participation in local races that influence the issues New Yorkers care most about ✓ Increase representation among those who show up, including younger voters and voters of color ✓ Reduce the influence of special interests, whose independent expenditures have more power to sway low-turnout elections ✓ Save the $60 million in taxpayer dollars it costs to administer low-participation primary and general elections New York has the roadmap to building a stronger, more inclusive democracy. Let's get moving. https://lnkd.in/eDmXknMj
