Host of The Learning Leader Show, Author: The Score That Matters, The Pursuit Of Excellence, and Welcome To Management
“Who’s your favorite guest?” That’s the most common question I receive after recording more than 475 episodes for 7+ years. It’s tough to come up with just one person after I’ve been fortunate to meet so many amazing leaders… But Kat Cole is one of the few names I respond with every time. That’s why, when Elizabeth Musser and Natalie Brooks asked me who my first choice would be to do a “live podcast” with as part of Insight Global Women’s Leadership Council “Raise Your Hand, Raise Your Voice” event, I said, “Kat Cole.” I’m honored to have been part of such a cool event. That conversation is now episode #476 of The Learning Leader Show. And despite having massively high expectations, Kat surpassed them. Also… the video of this event is a world-class production led by Adam Clark and the Insight Global creative team. (You can watch the whole thing on my YouTube channel) Enjoy!

A day I will never forget!
Yesterday I had the honor of attending Insight Global's Women's Leadership Council's annual conference. It was an amazing day filled with speeches and meetings run by amazing women. I have to give a big shout out to the current President of the WLC Elizabeth Musser for putting on an amazing event. So many amazing women worked hard to put on this event for over 300 people. I do want to go out of the way to compliment Natalie Brooks, Lauren Gould for putting together an amazing day. It made me so proud to work at a company that is not only 70% women but also empowers them to Raise Their Hands and Raise Their Voices. I also want to give a kudos to Eladia Watkins for giving a speech I will never forget. My close personal friend Ryan Hawk also did a live podcast with my new role model Kat Cole. Kat is the President and COO of Athletic Greens. A company I have been a fan of for the last 5 years. But before yesterday I didn’t know who Kat was. I was blown away. She had so many amazing tips and advice from her 20+ years of experience working at and running great companies such as Hooters, Cinbabun, Focus Brands and now Athletic Greens (in addition to her board work, philanthropy work and being a mother to two toddler). But I wanted to share one thing that Kat taught us yesterday that you can start doing RIGHT NOW to make yourself better. It’s what Kat calls her Hot Shot rule. Here is how Kat describes the rule, “The Hotshot Rule is the act of thinking of someone I admire, then pausing, reflecting, and asking what they would do in my situation/shoes/role, then answering what that one thing is and acting on it. The answer tends to appear quickly because it seems to be clear when you think about it through someone else's lens. That alone doesn’t create change - the trick is acting on it right away and then telling someone - the person it benefits, the person you envisioned who inspired you, or just someone you know will appreciate the change you’ve made. That is how I get better every week and help others see that constant acknowledgment that I can be better is a positive thing, not a sign of weakness.” She basically puts herself in someone else’s shoes. For me that could be a consultant, a Recruiter, a Sales Manager, a customer or any other number of people I get to work with on a regular basis. Then she looks at her world through their eyes. Most of the time there is a very simple thing she can act on to make her organization, her relationship, or her family better. Kat does this every Sunday night to start her week off better than she was the previous week. I absolutely loved it and I’m going to be working this into my routine this Sunday as well.
